  1. You used to be able to download PDF's From most of the big welding manufacturer websites. I haven't looked into it in about 10-12 years but it might be worth a try. Pnut
  2. Have you tried mancala? It's the game with the little stones or glass beads and two lines of holes you move around a la backgammon. I used to play it a lot. You can play anywhere just dig the little holes in the dirt and use acorns, bottle caps, whatever. Iirc it's been found at Roman archeological sites. I'm not sure where it originated, Africa,or the middle East maybe. Fun game and simple too. Pnut
  3. That's what I was taught to do to my scuba mask to keep it from fogging. I don't know if they still teach that. It's been a long while since I took a scuba cert. course, but it works well. Pnut
  4. Do you have to angle the stock to get it in the hot spot? If you do try adding a little more fuel on top and just barely increasing the air. Pnut
  5. Glad to hear it. I don't usually break out the electric drill unless it's a gonna be a particularly rough go with a brace and bit. Pnut
  6. You plan on using it don't you? You'd be surprised how many perfectly good antique tools are bought and not used. Pnut
  7. That sounds like a good deal for a post drill. Looks to be in pretty good shape too. Have you figured out where you're going to mount it? Pnut
  8. It'll work. It doesn't sound like you're going to be moving it so it shouldn't make a difference. Pnut
  9. Sounds good. A bit heavy. Quarter inch would more than suffice for the firepot. Post some pics when you can please. Welcome aboard and remember it's supposed to be fun. Pnut
  10. What about just calling it a wasp burner. Sounds catchy to me. Maybe a naturally entrained air burner or NEAB for short. Pnut
  11. The heat from the tuyere will cause a temperature differential that will make the water circulate. Hot water rises as the cooler water sinks circulating the water and supplying cooler water to the water jacket. A lava lamp illustrates the principal well. Pnut
  12. I've been looking at RR spikes as stock. I'm thinking about cutting a diaginal slice under the head and bending it flat then punching the hole. The top of the spike is already convex and it'll be solid. I might try to utilize the point for knicking the nail stock also. I haven't worked out the details quite yet but I'll post the results good or bad after I try it. Pnut
  13. Remember too you can only work about six inches at a time. Heating any more of the stock than that is a waste and if the stock is HC it's detrimental. Pnut
  14. Those are precious. I've been to one when I was very young. It was my great grandmother's dying wish that five generations gather at the old home place outside of Hazard KY. my oldest sister just had a son making the fifth generation. She flew in from Germany to attend. It's a dear memory from my childhood. Pnut P.S. congrats on the new job.
  15. Alas, my situation will not allow me to attend. The boss said no problem, I have a ride lined up, but have yet to buy a new used car, and I refuse to spend any money before I'm sitting behind the wheel of of my new beater. When did used cars get so expensive? I bought my last one ten years ago for 500 bucks. I can't find anything with a running motor for less than around 1500 bucks , and running doesn't mean running well either. Pnut I have no first hand knowledge but from what I understand it's the largest gathering of blacksmiths and blacksmithing tools and equipment in the country. That anvil or post vise or whatever you've been looking for is probably there. Also the combined knowledge of all the smiths, demos, how to's, and clinics are there waiting for you to take notes participate, and pick the brains of all the folks there. Not to mention a chance to participate in the community of your chosen hobby. Pnut
  16. It looks too shiny to be cannel coal but your description of it burning sounds like it. It may be oil shale or sub bituminous. If you lived here in KY someone could tell you pretty easily but would have to see it in person. I agree with you and everyone else who told you not to use it. You don't know what contaminants or heavy metals might be present. Pnut
  17. That's a shame about the anvil, but glad to hear you're making progress on the forge/burner. I was wondering if you'd gotten any farther along with it. Pnut
  18. I worked in a couple rubber refineries and the screw mixers were always called by the name of an old manufacturer, Banbury. The ones made by other companies were even called Banburys. I guess it is the same as a hot tub being called a Jacuzzi. Pnut
  19. It's a shame but it's true it's more important that a kid not hear something that might upset them than actually letting them know they're doing something improperly and showing them the correct way to do it.. I had my own.22 by ten years old and would spend hours by myself shooting after I showed I was responsible enough to be unsupervised with it. I wouldn't have had it long if I would have shown anyone otherwise. I was involved in cub/boy scouting and loved every minute of it partly because they're were some great adults at the helm , but without competent parents teaching and leading the children it's just babysitting with arts and crafts. Pnut
  20. Creeping into George Carlin territory. Pnut
  21. The tuyere is above the floor of the firepot so the ash collects below the air supply. If it gets above it I turn the air up and blow them out. With coal you have to clean the clinker out though. Pnut
  22. I've been a night owl since I was young. Second shift has always been my preference, but I've worked third quite a bit. I work in the daytime now but still can't manage to sleep past about 2am. I do miss the shift differential working at night though. Unfortunately I can only do the job I'm at now after 9 am. Pnut
  23. ggraham, that is a good point. If the bottom of the screen is nearer to the trailer than the top it may help with the reflection. Pnut
  24. Was it more widely promoted this year compared to last? Pnut
