  1. Hey Mickey.

I'm just getting started blacksmithing and am looking into making my own forge.

I'm currently reading through the 'Forges 101' thread (33 pages in so far!). I'm really thankful for all the knowledge you and others are sharing with he community . Being a complete beginner I can see myself reverting back to this thread thousands of times  over the years and what you are doing is invaluable for the future of blacksmithing.

I hope you don't mind but I have a quick question.

In one of your posts you say this,

"Since most box forges are made from brick, how well they work depends on the choice of the brick. The only excuse for not choosing cheap, super light and insulating, thermal cycling resistant K26 brick is total ignorance."

So im currently building a box forge, fortunately (or maybe unfortunately) my brother works in a dry wall factory and has an endless supply of heavy dense firebricks. From reading the thread my understanding is using these bricks will up my fuel consumption.

Are there any other reasons why using these fire bricks would be a bad idea?

Im planning to use my forge for various projects, currently my forge is about 15 inches long and plan to put 2 1/2 burners in.

My plan is to block off half of my forge with said free heavy dense bricks and use just 1 burner for the majority of  the work. Would there be any problems doing this?

Im sorry if these questions are vague and you've spoke about them in the thread. Before I started reading the thread I thought I had a tiny bit of knowledge but now I realise I know absolutely nothing!

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge, I hope I can share some in years to come!

    Glen
