  1. It is cocked to one side. I slit it down the exact middle up to about my crotch, but even though it was straight and in the right spot when on the ground, it wasn’t when on me. Should I have made the shoulder straps adjustable in the front and back?
  2. Since me going to St Petersburg is unlikely to ever happen, I would like to try cooking some of Alexandr’s dishes here myself. Unless they are secret recipes.

  4. Not sure why I wanted it. If is 38” long. I’ve wanted two longer sections for many years now to stack wood on.
  5. You will have to show me Arkie. It seems to be mainly glass. I was a little surprised that grate melted so quickly.

  8. Who is who in the pic? This evening I made a square center punch from a tie rod and welded up a file sandwiched between two pieces of WI. I am still trying to find the lines. I want it to be a drop point skinner, but I can’t see it in the billet. I painted the tip to see how much I might want to grind to get it where I want, but am still unsure. Top is the blank and bottom is the center point punch. I went with square because I thought it could do double duty as a drift should I ever need a square hole. Quenched it in water after taking it to non magnetic. Not tempered yet. Hard to see the colors run with only the light from the forge.

  10. This is it now. The top is 2.75 inches from the top edge of the fire pot. The top of the bullet grate is two knuckles on my middle finger to the bottom of the pot. It does work. Clinker forms and falls down in a ring around the grate. Clinker does form and clog the opening, but my poker can clear it without disturbing the fire. The problem is it melts quite a lot during each session. I need to try something else. The grate is carbon steel of some sort. Perhaps that is why it burns. This evening I went back to using bits of square stock placed over the tuyere opening. Better air flow. And don’t have to unclog the opening as often.
  11. What meat? Marinated? What else do you have with it? Lovely setting for it. We have the same migrations here. The Canadians (we call them snow birds) go down to Texas and Florida every winter. As for Americans, Florida, Galveston, Cabo, or Cozumel is where we go, although Oklahomans go to Colorado around Christmas to ski.

  13. So it is what we would call a gyro here. The photo below is from an image from the website of one of the gyro & kabob places in Norman just down the street from the hospital. It is ok, but only after I remove most of the salad from it. It is certainly better than the gyros you would get at the food courts of any of the shopping malls that are still around. That meat is only “meat-like”. I believe they mix ground beef and bits of ground lamb together with other “choice” bits of animal byproducts and form it into a round log that they roast upright on a rotisserie. I refuse to eat the mall version. I would sooner eat fried squid. Neither the mall version nor the version you would find in a proper gyro & kabob place are easily eaten on the move. That shawarma they were eating was totally wrapped and looked pretty good. Assuming I could find one made from beef, chicken, or pork, I think I would like them. I have never liked lamb or goat. How do you keep fungus from killing your roses? I really like that covered walkway. I still need to send pictures of where I would like to place one in my back yard.
  14. Gotta be some sort of fungal growth. I know it looks like grass, but it is July and grass is brown and crusty by July in Oklahoma. Seriously though, this winter we will be regretting all this lushness. The ice storms will hit and all the rapid, new growth of branches in the trees will come crashing down on the power lines I say it every year, but never follow through on it, maybe this year will be different and I will actually buy a generator. Different subject, I just watched Russian movie on Netflix called Major Grom: Plague Doctor. It was not terrible. Would have been a lot better if it had subtitles instead of overdubbing in English. It was also very cliche. Think 48 Hours meets Batman and you have the movie. Still good and entertaining. I didn’t get the location initially, but about 15 minutes in I realized it was St Petersburg. Very interesting mix of the old and the new. Reminded me of Paris and Amsterdam for some reason. Twice during the movie the protagonist got something which looked very much like a burrito from a small stand. What the heck was it? Russians eat burritos?
  15. Then batter up some strips cut from an old, leather apron and fry them. Safer, yet still gives you a more satisfying experience than eating fried squid.
  16. It didn’t turn out quite like I expected it might. Whatever that piece is, it was not structured like I thought it might be. The nipple at the bottom is too wide to be slid into the top. I had thought I would use it to decrease the size of the opening. That nipple is very thick walled and would have left me with an opening of 1.5”. I could have ground it down to fit, but that would have been a lot of work and I didn’t think I could grind it evenly. So I just cut the top third off of the top piece, necked down a short piece of 3” pipe and welded the 3” piece to the top piece I had cut off. It works ok. The opening is 2” wide, but I don’t seem to have a problem with coal falling through it. The coal clumps together so that isn’t a problem. The clinker mainly flows down below the top of the “bullet” grate. The opening does get clogged with clinker, but clearing it isn’t a problem. The 3” pipe down the tuyere holds the grate in place while I clean it out. I am not sure how long it will last. It has melted just a little around the opening. One thing I wish I had not done was flare out the bottom of the 3” pipe. I did it thinking it would help with air flow, and it may very well do that, but what I had not expected was the bloody thing would get wedged in place by ash and small bits of coke and clinker. I will have to pry it out.
  17. That has happened to me more than once. It isn’t much of a thing with thin stock, but witch thicker stuff, if I am not careful I will get it kind of offline in the cut and the disc will shatter. Always let it cut at the speed it wants to cut and do not try to force it. I don’t have the type of guard recommended for the discs I am using. Sooner or later I am bound to find out why the other guard is recommended. But at least I do use it with a guard. I have seen many welders who for whatever reason, remove the guard. That is just stupid. When a disc flies apart, it isn’t only the user who is at risk. Anyone nearby could also be severely injured. There are photos and videos online which show how serious these can be. Very hard tool to work without, but it is a very dangerous thing. This is the guard I should be using with my angle grinder when using a cutting wheel. The even have some with adjustable depth guides. Eventually I will just buy another grinder and have one set up for cutting and the other for grinding.
