  1. why would i wanna make one you say?because im a blacksmith and thats what we do,we make our own tools thanx thats all i needed to know,if there was a list or not.thanx for the help.
  2. yes i have made those tools from ships engine bolts but we call them square and round punches ,as to the designations of steel or wateva you call it im not asking about one kind of steel like 1045 what i wanted to get is something where i can learn ALL these codes(eg:1045,1080,15N20) so that i know them of by heart,i have already read throught and leant the hammer control and moving metal to where and how you want it,and all i wanted to know was what you would suggest as a good metal for it.
  3. i just did a search and nothing comes up on these codes, its so frustrating when i cant find the right stuff and then people tell me im not looking good enough but i truely do not have a clue what to be searching for,if somebody could just tell me the name of this "Steel table" i will be so greatefull.
  4. sorry but i dont know what 4140,5160 or 1045 is.
  5. Hi there guys its DM, ive got a question for people who have ever made hammers or know alot about them, anyway my question is what is a common metal to use when making a ball pein hammer?thanx DM

  8. No i must thanx you 4 leading me in the true direction.
  9. You know what?your right i must go slow and prepare it over a long time,in fact after i read ur post i realized that i dont haveenough materials to built it,im confident enuogh to do this task but i havent planned it out on paper or in my head and to top it all i dont even have 90% of the materials needed, i think ill take your advise and leave it for when ive planned it out more,im sorry but i just have a problem where if i see something i like and i know i can build it, i start asking questions and start to get all exited about making the object, and all the excitement floods my mind and takes away all the main parts i need to know, and i end up with something like this.please guys in the future if i ask you something about biulding something please ask me if i have planned it all out and if i have all the right materials and even ask 4 a pic of them,if you want to that is,any way thanx 4 all the help and good direction. Mike.
  10. Ok i get where you coming from and im sorry if i put out an incorrect message to you but i seriously am being taught all these joining processes,im not the best welder in the world but im also not the worst,i believe my welding skills are good enough for me to start this task of making a press, and as for my tutor wanting me to figure it out myself what he meant was that i mustnt ask him 4 help and that i must go to other people on internet or in person to get help on this task. Ps: im 18 but i have ADHD
  11. Right well you people call it that and we just do it so New Zealand is oviously different than america or where ever your from.i dont need to know fansy words like sub-con to weld properly And?how does this tell you that im not a good enough welder
  12. Can you explain to me what you mean?well if im thinking of what you are then ok here it is, im gana measure all the parts trice to make sure they are at the right length then im gana line all the pieces up how they should be one by one and then im gana use the wire feed to tack the pieces together and once its all in the shape it should be im gana mesure each side to make sure its the equal size, and once im totally sure that its all alineing up and correctly put together then im gana weld it up,once the press is all welded up and in the shape i want it to be im gana put brackets on all the corners(to make it extra strong)and tack them in place and then weld them. Is that enough for you?or do you want more?
  13. i spoke to Jack my instructor and he wants me to figure it out my self.and thats why i came here.
  14. you down know anything about me Frosty so dont all of a sudden think that i dont know welding because im half way through a light engneeringblacksmithing course and im one of the best welders there if you dont believe me then ill do some welds today and ill take a pic just to show you that i can weld, ive already got a welding qualification so DONT presume that im talking XXXXXx
  15. Ok this is seriously not making sense, the question what about making an electril press and then i changed my mind and decided im gana built a jack press, now where did welding come into the story???????
  16. What are you talking about?it doesnt mean that because im good at welding i must also know how to design a press.
  17. Arc welding,Mig welding, gas welding, soldering and still trying to get forge welding right.why?
  18. Watch this video and you will see what i mean, i do not want a casting foundry i just wanna know if its possible to use as a furnace while still being a gas forge YouTube - Cable forging 002
  19. Ok,can it still be used as a foundry and a forge?
  20. I know its a bit off the subject of gas forging but is it a bad idea to put brass in a crucible and melt it in the gas forge? If yes how can i prevent it?
  21. Any more tips to make my press beter or faster before i start building it
  22. Yes thanx,i plan to make it from I beam and square tubing and on every join or weld ill have another piece overlapping it so i know it wont break
  23. When i first started my smithing i went with my gut and i made a sword from mild steel on my first day i ever used a forge and that was about 4 months ago and now when i look at it,it reminds me of how far i have come and how much beter i am at it,if you feel you wanna give it a try just for fun id suggest using mild steel or a soft easy to work metal and then the next sword you make can be one thats a bit stronger than mild and so on.And in a few months time you go look in your garage and find that old sword and just examine it and you will see what i mean.good luck and i hope it all works out for you.
  24. you could also go to the local knife shop if there is one and ask them.
