I understand that, and if I had a smaller blower on hand I would use it but this one is what I have. Plus being hand cranked I can control how hard it blows. I also have 21 gears to choose from so I can make it blow as much or as little as I need it to.

Here I a blower I started yesterday I have no idea if it will work, but hey it's stuff I have laying around the house. I know it's a monstrosity but it moves a decent amount of air
I have to mount it to my forge base and make the outlet somehow neck down to the size of the tuyure. I have another option for a blower but I would have to make a housing, shaft, and find bearings for it. it's just a fan that I twisted the blades just to see if I could.
I'm sure this would ultimately work better but will also require a lot more time and work to get going. That is why I started with the other blower. If the squirrel cage ends up being a failure I will see what I can do with the mangled fan blade.
So what do you guys think?
P.S. Don't laugh too hard.

Hello fine people! I'm starting my first forge and would like any advice that you have to offer. So here are my stipulations for my forge build.
1. It has to be built at zero cost, mostly using scrap I have laying around.
2. The fuel will be charcoal
3. No electricity. I don't mind using electricity to build the forge but once it's up and running I want to be power free.
I guess that's it if I can think of anything else I will post it as I think of it.
So here is what I have so far.
I'm using this cause it's gonna sleep outside and this thing already has a lid, I will have to add weight to the lid but I'll get to that when it's time.
The diameter is about 16 inches and the depth is just under 10 inches. It will be a sideblast. Now onto my first questions.
1. How deep should I should t put the tuyere?
2. Should I mix some wood ash with the sandy clay I have dug out for it?
3. Should I put some wood or something at the bottom to lighten the load a bit?
Any tips or suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi guys thanks for all the kindness. I know it's been a while since I started this thread but the snow is finally gone and I have begun work on my forge and blower. I'm going to start a thread for each of them in their respective areas for any suggestions that you might have, hope to see you there.

Thanks Daswulf and Irondragon. I was thinking a sideblast JBOD would be just the ticket. I'll be starting a thread for that build soon. I have already read through most of the stickies I have been lurking around for a while. On the snow front, it looks like we are getting another 8 to 10 inches tonight and tomorrow, followed by More later in the week.

Ok, so I have been wanting to bang on hot iron for a while now but never seemed to have the money to get set up. Now I have decided that I'm gonna see what I can come up with without spending a dime (at least until I have a dime to spend). So I decided on a charcoal forge, a railroad track, and some old hammers laying around the garage.
I'm no stranger at working with steel as I grew up on a farm and I'm a pretty hands on type of guy, but I want to be able to make everything I need from hammers to tongs. As I get better I would l would like to sell some of the stuff I make so there is quite a learning curve i have to deal with.
MY first project will be to make a forge I just need to wait for a little more snow to melt so I can find my scrap piles, i took a walk out there today to see what I could see and there is still a lot of snow.
There is a Chevy impala and a few mustangs under this snow if you can believe it, also tons of scrap.
See you on the flip side!

It does kind of sound like an old farmall. The person I bought it from drove it to work for about 25 years an hour and a half in each way. I couldn't imagine making that trip in that jeep, but it can't be beat on the dirt roads and four wheeler trails.
