  1. man oh man, that is pretty. you take a nice picture too.
  2. Hey Blackbeard, The short of it is this: After finishing up my project, whatever it is, I hand-sand most of the black off so I get a lot of base metal showing, then I just reheat to the point of getting the oxidation colors. With small things like the bowls I just put them in the forge for a little bit. The colors in the line gradient is because the end was in the flame path. With the pot rack I just clamped it in my vise and heated it with a propane torch until the color flowed. If you work with coal or charcoal, you could just hold the object above the flame and watch for the colors. as soon as I get what I want, I quick dip or pour water over it to stop the colors and rub it down with beeswax. If I have a lot of small things like crosses or keychain leafs, I clean them all up and put them in my forge after I have turned it off.
  3. Thanks AM. I added a few pictures of the finished product. here is another sample of my finishing

    touchmark

I made my own attempt at a touchmark. I forgot to reverse the image so now my wife calls it my mark "that is normal to me" (my tribute to her graduating college despite dyslexia)

another picture of the coloring on the rack
  7. I "colored" the rack and sealed it with beeswax. I like this type of finish appearance.
  8. I told my wife that I wanted to make something that was actually useful. When she asked what it was going to be I told her that if it "worked" it would be a mother's day present. If not, then it would be a piece of metal that was all banged up - what I like to call "practice". This one actually worked. I haven't finished it up yet. I like to sand things down to mostly silver then heat it to various shades of oxidation. Question: I usually just seal with beeswax, but is there something else to use? just curious.
  9. Does anybody else use these things? I just got a pair and XXXXXX. I had to let everybody else who was still awake take a look into the forge with 'em on. amazing. Although my wife says I look like a dork from happy days.

  12. Jimi, if you check out the Anvilfire site Link removed at the request of anvilfire its a neat and relatively simple hawk from a RR spike.
  13. AM, I actually just finished a new rough set of tongs. I have no Idea what type they would be, but they hold 1/2 inch square both flat and on edge.I guess they would do well with round as well.I'll add pics a little later.
  14. Bruce, If I am ever in isles, and you have nothing better to do, would you mind If I swept up the "debris" taking up space under your benches? You know, "a home without clutter is someone else's home", or something like that.
  15. Thanks for the tips. I ordered a czech one and a swedish one. I may have addicted my little brother to banging iron and thought I would give him a hammer as a gift. Now I just have to get them and see which one is more comfortable. Maybe even give him a pair of tongs. who knows
  16. (maybe I'm dense, but) dirt makes good flux?:D
  17. Thomas, I wish I lived nearby. knowlege and stuff, two great tastes taste great together
  18. Great deal on getting the chance to talk with a real live history book. If I had the chance, I would ask him EVERYTHING up until he kicked me out:D
  19. Colleen, Welcometo IFI. I see we have another gold (copper is valuable too) mine to dig through for knowlege.
  20. Hey RC. those are nice looking basket twists. That is one of the things I have been aching to try. cool deal
  21. Mark, thanks for the offer. the tubing is 1.25 ID piping only about 3-4 inches long. I have had my piece soaking in vinegar since I started this whole thread and the galv is almost all gone. I have changed out the vinegar three times so far just to keep it fresh. The waste I dilute heavily with water and water the woods with it. nothing has died yet and the tube rusts up almost completely in just a few hours. When it all rusts up, I will blue the whole thing and run with it. Here are a few shots or where it is being used. there is no dope anywhere near the burner mount, other than on the burner supply. The smoke that did come out was almost like teflon tape in solid thickness (no other way to describe it). As soon as I saw it, I shut everything down. I always have the garage door open partway for ventilation as well. If this doesn't work, I will be getting in touch with you again to discuss shipping. many thanks, again paul
