Quite funny with all this talk of keeping work clean and scale free.. i've been having the opposite issue with recent pieces. They've been too clean of scale and hammer marks, so i've been having to gently hammer some scale back in to achieve a specific aesthetic -

That post vice stand is a work of art! Might have to borrow the ouroboros idea and give it a go... and finally get around to trying out a troll cross. Nothing exciting from myself recently, just been doing a bunch of small bits getting some practice in. -
Ok I’m over the whole build my own or use a freebie

False economy... a bigger forge costs more in fuel to get up to temperature and run on a daily basis. So if you 'outgrow' it after a year, the money you've saved by running a smaller, more fuel efficient forge can be invested in a bigger forge for those two or three infrequent times you need to work on something bigger... the rest of the time, just continue running the smaller one. -

Thanks. Yes it's a small side table... big enough for a large mug of coffee. Didn't have anywhere to set a cup on the armchair and came across an interestingly shaped piece of spalted beech in the firewood pile and decided to repurpose it -
Work it close to a welding temperature. If you get it hot enough it'll stick back together with ease. Flux not required.

Very little forging but a fun project all the same. Also added a bit more to the metal tree Just another hundred or so leaves to go -
I think you may have misinterpreted what I was trying to say. It was not supposed to be a blanket statement that people should use meds. I was trying to make the point that people with a real medical need can be judged too harshly and people should be more conscientious of jumping on the bandwagon of medication is bad full stop. As to my own credentials/experience. I'm afraid a public forum isn't the place for me to get into it. The the majority of views are saying avoid pills at all costs, I was trying to balance that with: it shouldn't be stigmatised if there is a medical need much in the same way other physiological issues are treated, be it glasses, insulin, etc

Well said Charles

I think we're getting caught up in the semantics of depression and being depressed. Completely different beasts altogether. One, as you say, needs therapy, and one which is a physiological issue needing medication. Just a bit of a touchy subject as people with clinical depression can get tarred with the same brush, adding to the stigma of pills being negative, whereas in their case it is essential to have a property quality of life and nothing to be ashamed of. One best left to the experts to properly diagnose and treat accordingly

I was working on a motorcycle frame a few years back, and unfortunately there was no easy way to watch where the sparks were going. All of a sudden I smelt burning, and my crotch felt a bit warm. I looked down to see I had burnt through my over trousers, jeans and fortunately stopped in time before burning through the final protective layer. That was a rather close call!

How can talking possibility fix a physical problem of chemical imbalance? That's like you telling me I don't need asthma inhalers when I'm struggling to breathe because there is plenty of air in the room. I get that doctors can be a bit pill happy and hand out things like vallium for a quick 'fix', but that isn't a proper depression treatment. Completely agree on the need and success of therapy, but not with the dismissal of proper and appropriate medication
-
Depression is a chemical imbalance in the brain. It needs drugs to restore the balance. There really shouldn't be a stigma around it. If you had asthma, you wouldn't stop taking medication just because you know the room is full of oxygen. Equally, people don't go around squinting when they need glasses to assist with their issues. Just because you can struggle on doesn't mean you should suffer when you can get the aid you need to live an easier life. Talk to your loved ones, seek medical assistance. They'll keep you on the right path and make sure whatever the treatment is, is the right one for you

Very nice indeed. Wasn't sure about the painted green at first glance, but it's certainly grown on me.

Finally got some time in the forge today and decided to make a start on a larger project. The idea is to keep going until I have a load of sizeable pieces and then join and install them against the fence as a trellis for growing peas etc against. Fun and boring at the same time. Quite repetitive but fun playing with organic shapes and making the branches grow the more pieces I forge -
Purpose, Profit, or Potential?
JustAnotherViking replied to rockstar.esq's topic in The Business Side of Blacksmithing
Profit is always first based on basic human instinct and survival. You need shelter and sustenance. To obtain these, you need to be paid. The profit doesn't need to be great, but it does need to come first. -
Show me your Bottle Openers!
JustAnotherViking replied to Arbalist's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Each time you make one, make a mental note of what you'd like to improve/what didn't work/what worked well... next one, apply your observations. No magical formula, just practice, practice, and more practice. Don't forget about the most important step once you have finished forging for the day: Quality control... be sure to crack open a cold beer or six, just to make sure the opener works -

JustAnotherViking replied to boattlebot's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
They certainly know how to put a bike together. I had a 750 Aero, still have a VLX600 (unfinished project), and my main bike these days (and for the foreseeable future) is a VTX1800S -

Can I save my new punch?
JustAnotherViking replied to VaughnT's topic in Slitters, Punches, Drifts, etc
If you were given a pint of water instead of the pint of beer you ordered at the bar, you'd certainly be sending it back... and that isn't even close to $60. You didn't receive what you ordered, so regardless of it being defective, I would return it, get a refund, and move on.
