    Forges 101

Yup a bit lol it's ok. I was looking for just a design and go-- understanding the principles is better. Thanks for the advice. Honestly when I joined the forum I was looking for a quick fix but I now know there's no such thing. And once I know the basic principles I can experiment on my own more thanks (M)
  2. For this burner or one like it could I get away with a 1-20 or even 1-10 psi propane regulator?

What should I use instead or how should I position it?

Probably not but I'd like to keep my options open heat-wise.

    Forges 101

Hey, I have a design here for a muffler forge, everything is labeled. I am thinking of just rigidizing it for now, then adding refractory and maybe plistix or something when I have the $$. I am planning on using 1900 F vermiculite board for the ends. wiIl that melt or something? I want a small chamber so as not to waste interior space (and thereby heat and fuel) as I only want to forge knives. the floor will be a high alumina kiln shelf as described. the burner will be an 3/4" oliver upwind, keith999 had great success with this (ammo can forge thread). I am wondering whether I should scrap the shell idea and find a balloon helium tank and also if the 2300 F kaowool will degrade in a small forge with so much heat. thanks (M) this is my first forge the kiln shelf should be 1/4"

    Burners 101

I am thinking of building the Oliver upwind burner. Some guys have had great success--welding heats-- but i also seem to get the vibe that others say it is a piece of garbage. does it usually crash and burn (excuse the pun) or is it likely i can do some basic knifesmithing with it? thanks (M)
  7. oh i didnt know. the "stove and furnace refractory cement" is CPD (construction product distribution services) brand and seems to be for building with firebricks as you said i was just going with the ammo can because it was simple. if something likr a stove pipe would be better then i'll consider that. thanks caleb
  8. yeah i have done some research and this seems good. unfortunately i have to stay cheap. i got a line on reasonable kaowool and kiln shelves and all that, i got some refractory cement. im planning on following the ammo can design but just making an identical box out of sheet metal.
  9. I'm planning on making the ammo can forge; it seems the simplest to me. I'm going to use a Ron Riel EZ-burner as I don't currently have a forge. I don't know where I would find 1" firebricks, I was wondering if I could cut a 2.5" one in half. I also read what Frosty said on another thread and I'm wondering if adding a high alumina kiln shelf on top of the firebrick would be a good idea. Also would I need a smaller forge with the diminished power of the EZ-Burner? And what type of Kaowool was that on the Flickr pictures 1" or 2"? I'm planning on forging knives and possibly machetes. Any other advice would be appreciated. Thanks Caleb Actually just looked at the "Oliver-upwind". I like the idea a lot but not the idea of buying a 40lb tank. Would I still have that problem with the EZ-burner?
