Thanks for the well wishes all, the property has a cmu building on it that I can setup shop in for now if we can get the place and negotiate for the old shop. Now I just need to sell our current home!
-
So the wife and I are trying to sell our home and one of the places we are looking to buy was built around 1846. Knowing its age I did a bit of research in the local historic society and found the house and location on some maps, this is where I got excited. One of those maps had the home and owner listed but along side the listing was another pin marked "Blacksmith Shop" Now this building is on the driveway of the home but the tiny piece of property currently belongs to the home across the street, something that if we can buy the home I would love to try to also acquire, it feels a bit more meant to be now with this new info. I would love to restore this old shop back to working order, the only thing that I worry about is that the stone foundation pillars on the back side of the building are smack in the middle of a creek, they have stood for over a hundred years but its something I need to look into. Thanks for reading and wish me luck!

When it Rains, It POURS!!!! Anvils
Wesley Chambers replied to monomoit's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
just noticed this post, I use this method of cleaning a lot of my junkyard and auction finds. To do a load of smaller tool heads at once I made a copper wire spiderweb of various sized holes that I can jam hammer heads and such into then just connect the one end of the web to hit all my parts at once, also you can use arm and hammer powdered detergent, makes the backyard smell nice and fresh. For The anode I like to use some scrap plate, something with more surface area to pull onto, this seems to speed up the process to around a few hours. -
My portable side blast forge/bellows setup
Wesley Chambers replied to Wesley Chambers's topic in Bellows, Blowers
I built this setup in about two days and was in a rush to get it ready, the Old West Fest had just ended and I didn't have much time to get it the way I wanted before Days of Knights. My first stone was a decorated portland cement creation that refused to setup over night in the 35º weather I guess, so I had to go with what I had- a busted garden paver lol. Ill try to hunt out the info again I had a few links from friends so Ill try to dig those up if I didn't delete the email. -
My portable side blast forge/bellows setup

I would like to run a twin but I dont want to keep the wife working them all day. Some of the shows I attend and would like to join I'll be working solo and this is about my only option. This event covered 1066-1400+ I was lucky enough to go with the great bellows, my research places them as far back as the 1200's. -

Hipposandals? Urgent!
Wesley Chambers replied to 05corbca's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
the wire sutures have been the most common repair I have seen, dremel a few quick holes and lace it with some small metal guards so they dont tear through.. sometimes they are VERY severe and live flesh can be pushed out with loading then pinched back by the wall on release.. Qcracks are bad business Edit: In rereading the post I'm thinking Pete is asking what if the sandals could be used to immobilize a qcrack, and while I guess if the rim was high enough all around it could but because of how they were held in place I don't think it would do as much good as a modern fix allowing too much movement and stresses where you don't want them -

Hipposandals? Urgent!
Wesley Chambers replied to 05corbca's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
well aren't we picky, they have been used up till around the year 1000ad as nailed on shoes were not wide spread till then and mostly for decoration and as the medieval era started sometime around 400ad I see 600 years as a good time frame to call them medieval, they were of many and varied types and designs from rawhide to metal.. Edit: also as reply to Francis Trez Cole, "There is evidence that the first metal horseshoes attached with nails originated in China" -Doug Butler (P3) -

As a farrier I need to ask WHY you would want this medieval thing attached to your horse, what is it your trying to accomplish? Also if the farrier cannot provide the info that you are asking for here ( if you are a real person ) why would you LET them do it??? -
Farriers anvil in good shape, dont know anything about hoover though sorry

Im betting this hammer is well past 60 but that in combo with over-tightening did the trick. I might try the forge braze along with the addition of a 2" wide steel wrap though Ive never forge brazed anything bigger than a heel caulk :P -

7" long, 5" wide at the bearing 2 1/8" diameter with a 1 1/4" opening I do have a friend that is handy with his torch waiting on a call back to see about his brazing skills, you think nickle rod over bronze braze? whats the stronger hold? I did find some bronze filler rod online to stick weld with.. -
