That is a very interesting idea for a grate. Do you get enough airflow that way?

Glenn I will get side pictures as soon as I make it out to the shop in a few hrs. I know it won't be a perfect forge but I wanted to get my feet wet with coal.

So sorry I somehow missed adding that. Coal for fuel. Small little projects at first but the ultimate goal is knives.

What shape and size should I make this firepot? I am going to make a clay sand mixture I've used with some success to make the size and shape fire pot I want. The shell is the top of a old air compressor it is pretty thick steel. It measures about 5"deep and 16"across.

About 15 min outside of Shamrock TX and about an hour and 15 min outside of Amarillo.

Ok! Thanks for the quick reply! It will be a propane forge. Sorry I forgot to add that. Call me crazy but I wanted to make for sure as long as I am careful there wouldn't be a huge fire danger because one little spark out here means one big fire! PS: I'll leave the forge welding to the pros for the time being!

I searched this and didn't find the answer I needed so sorry if I'm asking a repetitive question. Simply put I live in the Texas Panhandle where the wind blows 9 to nothing all the time, so a big fire risk all the time. So my question is when pounding hot metal how far will the sparks fly? I'm setting up shop in a metal barn so not worried about the inside of that but if one of those hot pieces of metal flew outside when it's bone dry and the winds blowin. ......

Howdy! I have made a few knives using stock removal ( which I enjoyed! ) but didn't get quite the satisfaction I think I'll get from forging. Now for my planned set up. For my forge I'm planning a simple two brick forge. For my anvil a piece of railroad track. And of course safety equipment and tongs/hammers. Not the best set up in the world but you have to start somewhere! Looking forward to getting to know you all and learning from all you masters of this craft! Daniel.
