Before getting a 2X72 belt grinder I used the large sandstone wet grinding wheel, seen here to the right of the Star power hammer. It did a very good job although taking longer to accomplish what I wanted.

Welcome from the Ozark Mountains. It may help with knowing where in the world you are located and what type of forge you are planning on building. I think the Japanese knife/sword makers do use some bamboo but turn it into charcoal for the forge. I have never used bamboo but have burned a lot of it, when I took out a large stand of it in our yard. I can tell you unless it is split it will pop rather loudly and throw sparks quite a ways. I'm with Frosty. The first thing I bought was my 30 pound Star power hammer. When I bought it and restored it to working condition (poured Babbitt bearings) I thought I would only use it occasionally. Now a days there isn't a time when I fire up the forge that i don't also use the Star. On the I made it, I would say it's my hot cut hardy. I can't control the wind, all I can do is adjust my sail’s. The size is indicated by the width of the jaws and yours looks like a 51/4 inch and in good condition. The screw box is missing the finial (end cap) which is common but won't hurt the operation of it. I have no experience with it and don't know if it's even available here in the Ozarks. What I have available and have used is crushed limestone and it works well for me both in he shop and drives. Hope someone with experience with it will chime in. Frosty has a lot of experience in AK with the road dept. maybe he knows about that stuff and we have several geologists on the forum also.
