  1. Another way is to mount the leg in concrete. Our shop vise had the leg cut off to mount it lower for striking. We wanted it at a higher height and as it was mounted on a stump embedded in concrete, I made the form higher so the leg is held tight. Has worked for 30 years now.
  2. It is not about what you have to work with, but how you work with what you have. ~ Glenn
  3. Welcome aboard... One of the most important reads on the forum is this one. READ THIS FIRST It is full of tips on how to get the best here like how to do the most efficient search plus many others. There are several threads on making a compact portable forge set up. This is one of them. https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/46989-the-rolling-anvils-video/?tab=comments#comment-488462 https://www.iforgeiron.com/topic/51534-the-rolling-anvil-project-update/?tab=comments#comment-570592
  4. Get it HOT and Hit it, and learn from there. Different degrees of Hot, and different amounts of Hit, it's in there somewhere, you just have to find it. ~ John B
  5. Welcome aboard, I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum. READ THIS FIRST It is full of tips like editing your profile to show your location, which is important to know because so many answers require knowing where in the world you are located. Other tips will tell you how to do the most effective search and some will help with flying under the moderators radar. Unless you are experienced in anvil repair, just set it aside. There are many threads on repairing/restoring anvils.
  6. We are not allowed to post links to commercial sites, however the name is allowed so you can search for them. We found Pops Knife Supply to be a good source for belts. There is a section here for many knife suppliers (with links).https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/151-knife-class-reference-material/
  7. Now the last thing to do is straighten the handle. Bent handles bug me.
  8. Welcome aboard Jay... Sadly Jack-O-Lantern hasn't been back on the forum since 2017, however your post will be read by many other folks and remembered.
  9. Heat the lug nut or other stock and with a punch/drift open it up till it fits snug, it will shrink into a tight fit as it cools.
  10. Yes buttering involves spritzing clean water on the insulation to moisten it.
  11. I think that's called an acorn (or maybe I made that up) How much of the leg is missing?
  12. Welcome aboard, I always suggest reading this to get the best out of the forum with tips like editing your profile to show your location and many others READ THIS FIRST
  13. Here is a good thread about that, a great chimney and hood design.
  14. Yet we still have no idea where in the world you are located. That is important because so many answers require knowing your general location. Like where to get good blacksmithing coal, even in the U.S. that answer would vary greatly depending on location.
  15. I believe we have several threads here about them add site:iforgeiron.com to the search should bring them to the top of the page. I tried it and got 40 hits. Welcome aboard, have you read this yet? READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum with tips like how to do the most effective search like I just did and others like editing your profile to show your location because knowing where in the world you are located will bring more accurate answers.
  16. We used Satanite topped with bubble alumina and it works very well. Kast-O-Lite 30 is basically the same in one single coat, sold by IFI. https://www.iforgeiron.com/forum/254-gas-forge-refractories-and-supplies/
  17. Another way to get a switch for your welder, would be to take the old one out, take it to an electrical supply store (not a big box store) and match it up with a counter persons help. As an after thought, my old Lincoln Tombstone welder's switch was sticking (sometimes in the on or off position) I sprayed WD-40 in it and it has been working fine since then about ten years now.
  18. If the picture you posted is your vise, I doubt the measurement for the spring on my vise will do you any good for yours. Did you read the thread JHCC linked for you? Quoting a full post especially with pictures, just before your reply is frowned upon, and we still have no idea of where in the world you are located. OOPS Frosty & I were posting at the same time.
  19. It could have developed some rust between the fields & armature. Have you tried spraying WD-40 in it? I have had success with that in the past.
  20. I would test it for sure, nothing worse than having a grinder and no motor.
  21. We have a saying, "pictures or it didn't happen".
  22. I will ring the anvil in the garden three times, to ask for healing light and comfort to be sent to you both.
  23. Yep, after a quick google search there are several farrier supply sites selling that type.
  24. Welcome aboard, please read this..READ THIS FIRST It will help you get the best out of the forum with tips like editing your profile to show your general location, plus many others. In my area Vulcan anvils sell for around $2.00 U.S. per pound, unless it's in an antique shop who think it is made of gold.
