  1. It never occured to me to wear one till the guys I practice with on the weekends mentioned it. I showed up the next week with my favorite, but they didn't think the Bar B Q stains were in the right spirit.
  2. Very nice detailed pics glad you posted them I have a Cannedy Otto 00 that the previous owners father adapted to use as a lathe, like yours, lying on it's back. Now I've got it and sure would like to use it vertically, but he tapped the original chuck out to 3/4x16. Jacobs makes a chuck tapped to take a stud that size, but they want in excess of $100 for it retail. I do have a nice Jacobs for up to half inch, but it's tapped for 1/4x20. Any suggestions on how to mate the two? Thanks! p.s. HOW do you get pictures to show up in a thread?
  3. and good photo composition on the 2nd shot, near-far, etc
  4. Oh...sorry I brought it up I was reading the one thread about hand forged hammers and kept seeing "no need..." and thought maybe the server or whatever had taken a hit. Just found out today they had lost power in the northwest for close to 3 days in some places
  5. Hi Skipping to the bottom and posting before reading all that has come before. Hope that's okey. Here's what I am using: I hope to clean it up someday but am not at all in any hurry to do so. I read Charles McRavens book and based on what he had to deal with I don't feel too bad. I certainly am not about to attempt anything until the quality & quantity of my work is such that I can justify the expense to "repair" it or get another one in better condition. That said, how bad is it folks ? And since I have a piece of 4150 - 5/8ths thick and 15" x 6" long do I want to hang onto it (the 4150) and use that to reface it? Thanks BTW - how do you post images IN the text of a message? I tried and it didn't work atal
  6. BEST demonstration of caloric content I do believe I've ever seen!
  7. W o W ! This is most exceedingly cool! We all know they worked on huge honking pieces like this, but to actually SEE it is something else: YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

  9. Hope this helps I have two portable forges...sort of One is a Centaur Forge Truck Model B with electric blower I got it used for $50.00 and while the firepot & tuyere are worthwhile, the rest is, uh...anemic ? enough that I am glad I did not pay full price for it. I had intended to use it as my portable/demo unit but 1) can't count on electricity at demo sites 2) the electric blower is spot welded to the frame/stand so I couldn't easily mount/dismount the electric motor as part of the set-up/breakdown without modifying it something I didn't have time for at the time of acquisition.... 3) The tuyere port where you would afix the blower cannot be aligned to the right or left - it sticks straight out at you or 180 degrees away from you as you stand at the forge no way to orient it at 90 degrees. This complicates attaching your portable blower 4) Bought a portable hand cranked blower and it came with a 400 whirlwind firepot & tuyere and all the fire brick I could haul away Wound up making something like this, only bigger and the firepot sits flush with the top Building a Portable - Bellows Fed, Forge pictures of mine here: Implements of Destruction... on Flickr - Photo Sharing! In short - get what you can. I would recommend one, but have not been able to afford them since they seem to go sky high at auction around here...
  10. Sorry to keep posting this sort of thing but human beings constantly amaze me... This guy is not going to endear himself to his potential customers: eBay: ANTIQUE, RARE BLACKSMITH & WHEELWRIGHT HAMMERS/SWAGES (item 200050230796 end time Nov-28-06 09:32:40 PST)
  11. Not sure I fully understand the definition of "It Followed Me Home" It suggests to me that the item was free, or darn near, & that you found it, or it found you, when you were looking for something else, or not looking for anything atal. Anywho, my offerings are in that vein. Freecycle? The Freecycle Network - Changing the world, one gift at a time. Anyone besides me use it? If not, you ought to, since all I am going to show you came to me that way. The idea is, if you have something you don't need or want, & think someone else might be able to use it, you post it on the mailing list & folks respond or not. So I responded to someone who said he had a bunch of coal, & got this: Free Fossil Fuels from Freecycle on Flickr - Photo Sharing! Now it's not blacksmith quality, but for some things it'll do just fine and it was free after all. 55 gallons worth of it. I kept laughing at how big the pieces were and he wanted to know why I thought it was funny. I explained to him how big blacksmith coal usually is & he said "Oh! I got some scrap steel you might want!" So among other things he gave me these: Bonus on Flickr - Photo Sharing! I am hopeful I can make one of these into a cheap swage block of sorts. The thin one is 1.25" thick and 1 foot by 1.5 foot. The thick one is about 9" x 10" and 2" thick. On another Freecycle trip to get a Dog House Free Dog House on Flickr - Photo Sharing! The guy said he had a big piece of steel & might I want it? See, he had just moved into the house & this big honking thing along with the dog house & a few other things had been left by the previous owner. I said sure & he showed me this: Another Freecycle Find on Flickr - Photo Sharing! I suspect a few of you know what it is, but I have yet to see another one this big except here: The Fountain Public House, Soham, Cambridgeshire, UK - History in the 4th, 5th & 6th pictures. The last Freecycle find was described as an old drill press that might not work. My wife responded to it for me. I had not seen the email & so did not know what I was going to find when I got there. I did not have high expectations figuring it might be one of these things: Amazon.com: Makita 122-190-0 Drill Press Stand: Tools & Hardware Instead, it turned out to be something MUCH better: Canedy Otto Drill Press on Flickr - Photo Sharing!
  12. I know anvil prices are climbing, but this is INSANE eBay: 30 lb. Anvil Kohlswa Sweden (item 200044129477 end time Nov-07-06 09:00:00 PST) or the seller thinks someones willing to pay that for a "collectable".

  16. Greetings Awl Let's see. Moved to rural Indiana from one of the U.S.'s Steel capitals, so naturally it was when I was surrounded by corn that I developed an interest in blacksmithing. Got interested in "appropriate technology" self sufficiency, voluntary simplicity and alla that and thence Roy Underhill The Woodwright's Shop and thence Don Weber Don Weber's Handcraft Woodworks Both of them make, or made their own tools at one time or another and so naturally....Wife suggested I take a summer week long class at the local U in blacksmithing 2 years ago and that was it. Not sure which I prefer, yet, woodworking or blacksmithing, but both give me an excuse to go to auctions and acquire old tools. Member of I.B.A. Iba altho have not really attended due to proximity, the price of fuel, and to many Honeydo's... In Ohio there's a closer bunch: OKI Forgers I joined up with them too. The president's wife decided he had at least one too many anvils so I got that and then attendance at various farm auctions lead to the rest. More than you could want to know about me here: Flickr: Photos from coalandice Howzzat?
  17. Hey Mr. Dean - I'm trying to get together a "Hello" for the intro thread/forum/thing...Gimme a bit. Meantime, southern, eastern central Indiana Due east of Indy and south of Richmond less than a mile from the OhiO border... Quad States, here I come?
  18. Greetings all First post at iforgeiron. Wondering if anyone knows what the ears ? or shoulders ? or lugs ? on a post vise are for, or if they are remnants of the process of making them or if they were made to serve a particular purpose. The part(s) I am thinking about are the part that projects out just above the screw on the outside, pointing towards the user. This vise here: Old World Anvils - Blacksmith Vise Post Vise shows them very well - at the base or bottom of the jaw and just above the screw. This one barely has any at all: http://www.thckk.org/post-vise-kk.jpg On some vises they are really pronounced while on others they're vestigal at best. Thanks Seamus
