  1. And then we have the OSAs, which of course are Object Shaped Anvils (like part of a forklift tine)...
  2. The stock support stand I have (got with the rest of the stuff) is two pieces of square stock that fit inside each other, welded to a plow share thingy, with a v-shape on the top and a handle welded to all-thread that goes in a nut on the outer piece of square stock to make it easily adjustable. Sorry, no pics now, and not a very good description. Now I have to start my German homework...
  3. Well, we're glad to have you join us. Put your location in you profile, and always read the stickies at the top, we don't mind questions, just not ones that have already been answered about a dozen dozen times. I've seen people get in big trouble over not doing their research, but you shouldn't have any issues. P.S. If your back is getting you it very well could mean that it's time to raise the height of the anvil, so you're not bending over.
  4. Well, I burned myself... but only once, made my first leaves (including a beech leaf), made a hanging hook for my leather apron from a rail spike, and met up with the local smithing group. Oh, did I say I learned a lot? Unfortunately I don't have any pics just now.
  5. When you dress the anvil you may as well (should) dress the peen as well. (I need to do some of that too, used some today that were done right, and decided mine need more work.)
  6. Or the blueprint on here in articles might help if you haven't found it already.
  7. Hello, glad to have you. It sounds like you have a great deal more experience than I do. The only thing I can tell you is that if you add your location to your profile, people won't keep reminding you to do so...
  8. What I was wondering about the 3d printing idea was whether or not the plastic they typically use would work, but I'm guessing it might not be durable/strong enough.
  9. I've also wondered if I could get a friend with a 3d printer to make one... would it work and be strong enough?
  10. Sorry, I was not intending to start a big deal over this. While you are indeed correct that weight and mass can be used pretty much interchangeable in everyday life, technically there is a fundamental difference. Weight is defined to be equivalent to mass (the amount of matter in an object) times the acceleration due to gravity. This means that an object's mass never changes, but it's weight can, depending on the strength of gravity it is experiencing. Thus, on earth, since gravity doesn't change (much, but that's a whole 'nother can of worms), we can use them to refer to how much we are purchasing, etc., without it being an issue. Again, sorry for the trouble this caused.
  11. So mass is measured in pounds? Has something changed? It bugs me a bit when people refer to weight in kgs as well.
  12. Well... Mod note: Link removed due to the threads relocation
  13. It looks to me like maybe he drew it out, but left some material on the end to make the leaf?
  14. And Terre Haute. My Grandparents live in that area-- Millersburg.
  15. He is after all the Grammar hammer.
  16. Mine, which was modified by welding some big square tube onto the mounting bracket, is mounted on the table the anvil is on. That's not how I set it up, that's how I got it, but I haven't had any problems with it getting in the way of using the anvil. Some time I'll get around to taking pictures and posting them. In the picture you can see the table (before I mounted the vise, this was before I actually started, so I now have a different setup). The vise goes on the far end, opposite the anvil, and would face toward the left if it was mounted.
  17. I tried the above with my 170 lb Trenton (29 1/2 x 10 3/4 x 4 1/8), and got about 220 lbs. Of course the formula would be different for different brands with different shapes, etc. It appears that 3/10 would be about right for mine, instead of 2/3. I guess this thread got sidetracked....
  18. Just be careful that stuff doesn't shift and get you like a pile of logs can...
  19. And the more you learn the more you learn how much there is that you still have to learn.... I agree that I am and am likely to remain a beginner for a while...
