  3. ok i appreciate your thoughts and I do plan on building one with your recommended specs. I did also find a compact hammer that Sam Salvati built what do you guys think of this design? https://youtu.be/IpDjho1rXgA let alone if it works half way efficient. (Anything is better then trying to draw down a 3/4 inch bar by hand lol).
  4. got a project for everyone. Im looking to design a compact tire hammer about a 25 lb ram that i can move around with a hand cart. id like it to be able to be used out side since i dont have a garage set up for my forge. hope someone will help thanks ps please dont state the obvous like build a garage or buy a hammer lol
  5. Hi im trying to build a cupola furnace. ive seen some sort of plans on "backyard metal casting" website but the furnaces that were built didn't seem to work right. Im hoping someone here has plans of a working cupola furnace. Id like to build a small one say 6 to 10 inch size id. hope you can help thanks!
  6. i do have experience forge welding but ive never attempted the w pattern before what i may do is forge weld the cut "chunks" in series not line all them up in a canaster and heat the whole thing.... say the billet is 6 inches long ya cut it up into 1 inch chunks my idea is the stack 3 of them up forge weld them and then take that billet thats forged welded and stack the remaining 3 on the end and forge weld them to it that way i can guarantee all of them are welded due to me not having a power hammer. clean slag .... off the end of billet before i do the other half of course.
  7. nope lol it be with 2 ppl to draw it down with a sledge hammer. wish a had a garage for a trip hammer it be really helpful when i make this.
  8. Hi I'm trying to figure out what this pattern is. it kinda looks like a sanmai edge, I'm not sure if this is considered a "W' pattern or what, let alone how to make this. hope someone can help me thanks!!!
