  1. I'LL BE THERE! JUST FINISHED DEMOING AT THE RURAL HILL SCOTTISH FESTIVAL IN CHARLOTTE THIS PAST WEEKEND. MY ARM IS STILL SORE!
  2. You can also by the petal pre-cut from www.blacksmithdepot.com under supplies. They are out of 18ga steel and are very simular to Bill Epps' pattern.
  3. I have had fairly good luck using 3/8 to 1/2 round bar. I also did some with 5/8 threaded rod for serrated-edged leaves.
  4. Yes she is, that is after she picked up her jaw! LOL
  5. HERE ARE A FEW IMAGES OF WHAT I GAVE MY WIFE FOR CHRISTMAS. THIS WAS PRETTY INVOLVED FOR ME AS I HAVE ONLY DONE S-HOOKS, DRIVE HOOKS, AND SOME LEAVES.
  6. That marking should be "BELL SYSTEMS" and it is a lineman's hammer. And yes, the hole is for use as a wrench. The lineman would start a step/screw with the hammer end and run it in with the wrench hole. They are not in use very much except in rural areas as the linemen would much rather use a bucket truck or ladder.:D
  7. If you are not afraid of the epa, used motor oil works well at preserving wood (just don't sit on it!). Ideally, you would dilute the oil with a little diesel fuel in a shallow pan and set your wood in it, end grain down, and let it wick up the wood.after a day or so, turn the log over. After a few days your wood will be fairly well protected. The volotiles will evaporate in a few days and should not easily catch fire from sparks or the occasional hot steel. :d
  8. it's called a kilt, cause if you call it a skirt (or dress) you'll be kilt' . Yeah, i'm not sure why he is dressed in semi-scotish attire for the civil war...revolutionary war maybe, but not civil.
  9. CAREFUL ABOUT WHO YOU WOULD AMBUSH! SOME OF MY FRIENDS ARE ARMED! :o
  10. LONG TIME BLACKSMITH FROM CHARLESTON, SC HAS PASSED AWAY AT THE AGE OF 97. A PIECE OF LIVING HISTORY HAS PASSED ON TO THAT GREAT FORGE IN THE SKY. LINK TO THE NEWS ARTICLE: Renowned Charleston blacksmith dies - CharlotteObserver.com
  11. They use a similar process to make fiber optic cable. The take a optically doped glass billet, roll an outer layer of reflective glass around it. Then they take it to the top of a tower heat it and it literally creates a continuous drop. By the time it reaches the bottom of the tower is is the right size and cooled enough for adding the plastic coating and then rolling onto large spools
  12. NOPE, If you got Gorilla glue on your hands and did not remove it before it dried, it will have to wear off (short of taking a sander and removing the top layer or so or skin!). Take it from a woodworker who often had black hands (till I got wiser and started using latex gloves!).
  13. Blacksmith depot kayne & son custom hardware 100 daniel ridge road candler, nc 28715 (west of asheville) 828-667-8868 or 828-665-1988 prices as of 06/12/2009 50# for $20 (shipping not included) 500# (loose, pick-up only) for $180 Blacksmiths Depot | Blacksmith and metalworker tools and supplies
  14. Try looking at bp0141 and bp0127 in the bluprint section. They were a big help to me. A few suggestions not covered in the blueprints. 1-make your valves as light as you possibly can (otherwise as your lower leaf is dropping to fill the lower chamber you will have to overcome the weight of the valve). 2 make your lower chamber half again as large as your upper chamber (reduces pumping). :-)
  15. Who in their right mind would spend $518 on this blower? The 150cfm would be way too much air...
  16. Try looking for the post about a coffee can forge. It is here somewhere on this site (i saw it, i swear). It is small and compact and uses a handheld propane or mapp gas torch.
  17. I would like to show you what can be made out of Virginia Pine. (this is a project that I worked on at a Historic Farm in Charlotte, NC. The shingles are white oak. :)
  18. A level of skill i am aspiring to reach..... A beautiful rose.
  19. Avadon, yes that is beautiful, but it is not mine (i wish it was! And i wish i was that good!)
  20. OTHER THAN THE HELP I HAVE RECEIVED BY LURKING AND READING, I ONLY HAVE MORAL SUPPORT. UNFORTUNATELY, MY SCHEDULE DOES NOT GIVE ME A LOT A FREE TIME TO GO TO ANY MEETINGS OF A FEW BLACKSMITH CLUBS I HAVE FOUND IN MY AREA. FORTUNATELY, THERE WILL BE A LONG-TIME BLACKSMITH AT THE GAMES IN A FEW WEEKS AND I HAVE SCHEDULED SOME VACATION TIME THEN (PROVIDED MY COMPANY DOES NOT GO ON STRIKE!)
