  1. That is great advice nate, thank you. The crux of the matter seems to be that each person prefers something different. Maybe I will clean that little blade up and give it to a hunter as a precision skinner and start from scratch on carving knives.
  2. Thanks for the responses guys. I have done lots of hunting for popular knives and the style that most guys seem to like. I knocked one together to try out knowing that the handle was not right for a competent carver. I will try it out and see what needs improvement then go from there. It is still super rough until I grind it a bit and sharpen it.
  3. That is a great blade. I really like the look of that pattern. What did you make that guard from?
  4. Blast I got caught with a lack of information! Truth be told at this moment I am looking at making small whittling blades lIke chip carvers. Something akin to a scalpel which leads me to think a very stiff blade is ideal.
  5. I am hoping that some of our wood carvers can give me some help. I am hoping to make a carving knife or two for a local wood worker to trade for some help and shop time. I have ideas and rough plans but I need some help with the fine details. First and possibly most important, how hard do you prefer the blade to be on a 1 1/8 straight ground blade? I understand that very hard blades are the norm bur some guys like a bit of flex in the blade. More than anything I am curious about preferences from folks who have used a few. Second is the balance of the blade. Is there any drawback to having the balance point closer to the center of the palm or is index finger the only real choice? Thanks for the help and advice guys.
  6. Sadly I can offer no advice as far as failing welds goes, but when I hit a rut at work I just try to make the next day a bit more fun. Crank up the music, crack a few jokes, make sure lunch is killer and focus on those things. I have had plenty of chances to have poor days at work over the years and that usually gets things headed back in the right direction. Things will come back to an even keel for you soon, just keep moving and you won't get stuck too bad. If nothing else get Jerry's number and chew his ear.
  7. I have heard of guys having good luck with miniature horse shoes. Quick and easy to turn out and dirt cheap for material cost.
  8. Welcome aboard. Most of your questions have been covered very well as the folks have said. For your forge questions check in the solid fuel forges section. There is more information there than you can possibly need. As to building knives, start very basic then move to more complex tasks. Forge welding is not beginner stuff. Get very good with a hammer and reading your metal. Practice till your arm is worn out then read more. It is pretty cool to look back after a few months and see just how rough your old work was.
  9. Welcome to the forums. There are quite a few of us from B.C. and the North western states on here. Good luck building your shop. Lots of information in the forges section to make a good forge that should fit your needs.
  10. Dave helps the guys with the boat where he can. He asks about what the guys are hoping to find if they get on board the wreck. As he reaches for his knife to cut a root he mentions that he chucked the compass that used to share the sheath with his blade. "Blasted magentite made the thing more of a distraction than useful tool"
  11. Dave tags along with Brandon to help dig roots. As they work Dave asks why there is so much interest in the wrecked boat. Are they hoping to fix it?
  12. I am probably not the one to ask about boats. Certainly not ones you want to keep upright. Dave is impressed with the camp and the level of orginization he sees. He offers to come look at the shipwreck with the guys.
  13. As they head towards camp Dave asks the guys for the story of what has happened to bring them here. After his time alone in the bush he is eager just to talk to people again. He keeps a close eye on the brush around him during the walk and asks the other two about any run ins they have had with bears and cats.
  14. Hi guys. My name is Dave, and I am super happy to see you! I bought myself an old fishing boat a few weeks back and sadly I capsized it trying to get to a beach for clams about five days ago. I have been wandering down(up?) the shoreline trying to find any sign of people since. Is there any chance I can tag along with you guys?
  15. Well you certainly got me there. Truth be told it was given to me right after it was made. It is only eight years old and has always been inside. The idea of painting it still scares me a bit
