I haven't seen much on this sight about collaring, so I thought I'd share a few pictures and some information.
Collarring is the most efficient means to join 2 or more pieces of metal together and form structures that I have ever seen, and it is also the simplest. The technology is basic and straightforward. As long as there are at least 3 connecting points per scroll you will form a rigid structure with nothing more than the collars. Collars can be made and installed in one heat, or you can make the "U's" up in one heat then install them later in another heat. It never takes more than two heats unless you are forge welding them.
Here are some examples of collarring, and I'll go and take some pictures of the tooling and post them if you are interested.
Thats a good looking kid must take after his dad.lol -

I think it looks great! Forged by hand, you guys are killing me... How big is it?
Thanks from head to toe 11" tall -
Well Brian I tried it and this is what I got. The wing is not easy mine kinda sucks. It was fun though my boy held the steel while I fullered it was nice to get him out to the forge it had been awhile. David says hi to you and Karen.
I forgot a eye and I started with 3/4 by 3/16 needed bigger fuller. -

So, Ed Brazeal is getting ready to leave for Oklahoma and he was one tool up so I figured I would make him work. So I cut a piece of 2 1/4 round 7" long of 1045 and said get ready. Ed and I had been talking about how we would make a flatter and we went with his idea. So the heat began and the striking came hard and in one heat we squared it up to set in swage block. The next 3 heats we upset the flatter face from 3" down to 5/8" thick. The next heat was for the eye. We difted twice and checked for the handle. Then came the striking end, in two heats we tapered and smoothed to a perfect square. Then we drifted two more times to increase eye. I now have a sexy flatter but Ed says I owe him two more tools or one sexy flatter. WE BOTH WILL GET A GOODNIGHT REST TONIGHT!!!!!!!
Well here is payback and Ed's sexy flatter -
This is good to 2600 we use for our eye punches

These tools where made by Ed Brazeal and Mark leonard over the past month. We had made others but where given away. Ed and I have been taking turns mastering and striking. The top swages to me where the funnest because I had never seen them hand forged before. This last month with Ed has been great. We are increasing are tool conllection and having a great time doing it. We made several different size fullers. Set hammers, butcher,1 1/2 top swage,2 top swage, cupping tools, hump tools, punches and the list goes on.
I was told not to use the word mastering I should of used the word director. I apologize for using mastering I was just trying to let you know who was on what side of the anvil. -

What's a hump tool ? Anglo / US same words have differing meanings, could you please elucidate.
A hump tool is radius blocks that surports the hammer or tool when drifting. In some cases the front of your tool is at a different hieght than the striking side so we have many different hieght hump tools -

Well once again Brians right just do it 10 times and you will do it in one heat. I didn't believe but now I can do a horse heads in just one heat.
