Greetings, my Dad was an apprentice blacksmith at his induction in 1943. After discharge he went to work at Goslyn in Birmingham , Al as a helper to their smith a Mr. Charlie Crews. I think his first name must have been Mister as Dad never referred to him as anything else. Dad went to work for Hayes Aircraft in B'ham as a heat treater and retired from there. He never did any forging at Hayes but his tempering and annealing etc. were pretty well known. But, back to the present, Dad wanted an anvil, and he wanted about 500#s worth of anvil. The one in his shop has an arm and hammer logo stamped on the side, and the words "wrought iron" beneath which the numbers 4 0 1 are clearly stamped. I assume from my reading this is a Columbus Anvil and Forging product and the weight when forged was 401lbs. Does this make of anvil have a number? If so where? The anvil is 35" from tail to horn and has a 22' face and 3' step. The width is 6" and the hardy hole is 1 1/4" square. The priddle? hole is 5/8' diameter. The anvil rebounds nicely but is quiet as a tomb. It is set firmly on a heavy steel stand which might mute the ring and I can detect no cracks or repaired cracks that may have silenced the ring. Any thoughts?
