  1. Sorry for the double post. I would say im at and intermediate skill level. I will buy the stock instead of trying to square the rebar. any tips on what kind of finish to put on the metal for out door use? i dont want to paint it black.
  2. Hey guys I have a project in mind. Call me crazy or maybe a little ambitious But i want to make my daughter her first wagon. Her 1st birthday is going to be on the 23 of December and Christmas is just a few days after. So i cant to make the frame and sides out of wood. Im wanting to forge all the brackets, both axels, handle, and all hardware for the wagon. My question is Do i have the time? I am a teacher and Wrestling coach. Wrestling season has started for me. I don't get home till 6:30 ish if i don't have a duel to coach at. So i was thinking If i get home at 6:30 or 7 i could do my fatherly and husbandly duties and be out in the shop by 9. I would work till 11:00 or midnight get cleaned up and what not. I cant really work Saturdays because i will have tournaments every weekend. but my Sundays would be pretty free. I could put in a good 4 hours on Sunday. So i have roughly 18 days to get this done. We are doing her Birthday on the 20 of December. I was thinking I could work at least 3 week days and sunday giving me roughly 26 hours to make the wagon. Can it be done????. I will forge the axles, axle brackets, side wall brackets. the handle, all the rivets to be user join the metal. Im thinking of using 1/2" rebar cause i have a lot of it laying around. I will turn it into square stock then forge from there. Or should i just buy square stock. If i do buy square stock what size should i get so it is not ungodly heavy for people to pull around? Also what kind of finish can i put on it to keep it from rusting outside? I think I might be bitting more off then I can chew in the short time I have. I love the forge to finish look of metal. That black dark hammered yet smooth look. I have a bees wax/ boiled lin seed oil mix i put on my work after im done for stuff that stays in the house but what can i use for the outdoors metal? Please I need advice, tips, and or tricks to help me get this done.

  4. Thanks for the tip i will try to find an OTR truck axle shaft. I dont what else could work for a bick if i cant get a OTR truck axle shaft?
  5. What is What does OTR stand for and what is bed in your stump mean? Put it into the trump?
  6. Hey guys and gals i got my first anvil mounted to the stump and ready to do some work. My dad got it given to me from my uncle for free so i cant complain. It has the horn broke off it. My uncle said it was knocked off a work bench and the horn snapped off. Well that is what he was told. It was just sittin outside his shop. My uncle said all he used it for was to crack walnuts... HA. There are not any marking i can see on the side so im not really sure what kind of anvil i have. I know it weighs about 100lbs with out the horn. From the size of the face im assuming it would have been a farriers anvil. The face is only 5" wide so it is not that big. It might be 6" but i don't think it is. It has some very nasty chips out of the sides right along the main body of the anvil face. and there is a bit of sway to the face but not bad at all. I took a 80 grit sanding wheel and cleaned all the rust and dings out of the face. You could tell it had been hit quite a few time with hammer right to the face of the anvil. It was free and i feel it will get me started. Here are some pics let me know what you think. Also if anyone could help me figure out what kind a anvil it is that would be great as well. Also what should i do about the huge chips on the edge of the anvil? should i leave them or what?
  7. I really like Powers Forge like everyone said. It is a strong last name and goes with the trade well. I just have to figure out how to make it have that Ring that people remember. I love the thought of thunder thought but i dont want to sound to gimicy or juvinile. Any thoughts how to tie them together? OH you guys are great thanks.
  8. ARRRR MAITTY... lol I do Like Powers Forge. Im really into the nordice and viking lore and there master crafters are dwarfs so that might play into the name as well. I want my makers mark to be the runic SP combination. Lets here more ideas
  9. So im wanting to name my "forge/ shop" I do not have a business yet nor do i call my little garage my buisness. I just want to get a name for it. So when I start selling what I craft and make there be a name behind the wears besides people saying. Oh Scott or Scottie/ Scotty Powers made it. I think when people say this was made at( so and so blacksmith shop or forge and Him Her or the other forged it) sounds better. Im leaning towards the name Thunders Forge for my little "shop" aka garage lol. Is there any thoughts on this or what not? If i deside to make this name for my forge and what not. If another person has it will i have to change the name or what?
  10. I finished this last night not the best but not the worst i think. Here are the pics from start finish. I might make it a slitter i dont know yet. i hjave to put a handle in it and see how it works on splitting small wood.
  11. I have 3 more slapper 8oz ball pein hammer heads im going to make into hot sets. Thanks for the tip on the drift i will untemper it. So with my eye like it is with the drift i have it will make the ax look more like a tomahawk?
  12. I have made a hammer and small ax drift, set of hot punches and chissels, and have started turning an old 16oz ball pein hammer head into a small bushcraft or shop hatchet for splitting small wood and what not. Tell me what you, any tips tricks or knowledge, or anything that could make me a better blacksmith. I have only been at this for about 3 weeks now.
  13. Could anyone tell me the Pros and Cons to both Side blower forges and Bottom blower forges. If that is what its called.
  14. i was thingking more like the charcoal that im adding after i get a nice hot fireball going in the forge pot. Not so much as to get the fire pot wet it self.
  15. Can I use water like they do with regular coal to manage the burn time and for heat control or will it not work that way?
  16. thanks guys. WHat is a top tool? it is like a sliter, punch, chisel, or cut off tool i can use on the hot metal with out damaging the tool? Im wanting to make a cut off tool, sliter and maybe a punch dependint on how much i can get the ball of the hammer to taper down for the punch.
  17. Are Ball peen hammer heads tool steel? If so I have 2 8oz and 2 16oz heads laying around and wanted to make a few hot sets out of them. Would they work good for that?
  18. is there a section were you can buy or trade your tools, items, work, and other stuff and what not?
  19. I probably looked strange to my neighbors. I was wearing a pair of tented safety glasses. I grew up around welding and cutting torches so i learned the hard way about eye protection when working in low light condition. Thanks for the tips. I will use it for flux. I just started out and an trying to develop some kind of skill, hammer control, and how to tend the forge to be more efficient at it. Any other simple projects i can do to learn these things im all ears.
  20. Just did a bit of forging tonight and thought the forge looked xxx xxx in the dark. Here are some pics.and this is what I made not the grandest of things but I made it with my 2 hands
  21. I got this anvil given to me and I have not seen it in person yet. I just have a few pics from my dad. My uncle gave it to me and my dad is picking it up for me. What would you guys do about the chipping in the edges? Also what about the face of the anvil. How would I go about restoring this or fixing what is wrong with out damaging the metal any more?
  22. I bet there is tones of stuff on here about my question. I have been reading into getting started in black smithing well maily blade smithing. ther eis so much info out there it is very hard to understand it all. my question is what kind of fordge do i need to look into making? I have the metereials to my a charcoal forge and i am leaning to that kind. Can i get a charcoal fogre hpt enough to forge weld and what not. also what is the cheapest way for me to make a refactory to put in the charcoal forge?
