  1. I would like to have one of the inline ones. Where could I get plans for one?
  2. I have been looking at a treadle hammer. Thinking I can afford one of them. I have found a couple places that sell them for around $1000.
  3. I am 100% with 2 surgeries and a fusion. I have some nasty nerve damage. I get out and help when I can just not a lot I can do. And I love doing it, Im not very good at it but know some stuff. I have looked at power hammers but $2500 is just out of the question. Its sad because it helps me deal with things clears my mind.
  4. Sorry about asking the stupid question. I guess I cant figure out the search feature. I don't swing a hammer, I am a disabled Vet fell from a heilo and broke my back and 12 pins later no hammer for me. But my boys really like doing this. And if you live off of a VA check you will try to find ways to get your kids what they want (need). My oldest one is more of the art type he makes all kinds of stuff with metal, but the middle one want to make the knifes. But I will do as much reading as I can. living in the country with nothing but dial-up its a long process. So reading for me from now on.
  5. I am new to all of this and trying to get my boys off on the right foot. I have a bunch of torsion bars from 4x4 trucks, leaf springs from diesel trucks, u-bolts, and a lot of old bearings from hay disk mowers. I just don't know how to find out if its good metal for blades. Any info would be great.
  6. I know this is a old topic, But I tried to get the VA to pay for me to go to the blacksmith school in Old Washington AR. They told me that they cant do that for a hobby even if it helps. I was in the Navy 94-97 AMCM and combat crewman. I fell from a MH-53E and messed up my back. 2 surgeries and a fusion later I am trying to find something to do with myself. Its hard for me to deal with a lot of people. I have nerve damage in my legs so sitting all day or standing for that matter is not a option. But I can get outside on the ground, in the dirt and piddle all day. I like to tinker and work on stuff, and yes it helps. There are days that I cant mentally handle people but out under my little carport messing around with stuff sure makes the day easier. I have always worked with my hands, I work on my tractor, with my animals ,just being in the garden clears the head. just trying to find something the boys and I can do together. And keeps me from hating the world.
  7. Hello, I just picked up two hand crank blowers. I picked them up in South Arkansas at Marks Mills. For you that don't know it is a Civil War battle site. It had 3 mills on the ground where the South surprised the Union. I got it from a Auction just about 1/2 mile from the old mill ground. Very old home stead, I had a couple old men (80'S) tell me they where from the old mills. Both are in working order one is a No 625 Buffalo forge blower and the other is a 990 Tiger blower. I don't know much about them but I had family in the Ar 7th in the civil War, So I had to buy them.
  8. Hey guys, been reading for a while. Trying to get a small shop put together for my boys (14,11) . I have them tools some anyway, about all the good metal they need. I hope we will be forging next week.
