  1. So the bore size has nothing to do with the power of the grinder
  2. Making a 2 x 72 belt grinder and the plans say use a 4 inch drive wheel with a 5/8" bore. My question is can I use a bigger bore size but the same outer diameter. What is the difference in using a bigger bore
  3. I have researched the grizzly wheel but I'm in the UK and shipping prices are sky high, the postage on the link is cheap which is an added bonus The link you had posted only displayed a page with a photo of a blue wheel, covered in pop up ads, maybe in UK it showed differently.
  4. In in the process of making a 2x72 belt grinder and looking for contact wheels, I found this link to off site commercial site with generic contact wheels photo removed And was wondering if anyone knows if they are any good as they seem quite cheap.
  5. Thanks Charles, think I'll use 1 layer of ceramic blank and an inch of refractory cement and a wee coat of itc-100. I think this should be sufficient.
  6. Plan to use it for forge welding knife billits, but high temps are needed and so what amount of insulation can aid this process. I know that flux degrades the blanket which is why the refractory cement is needed but would 1 1 inch blanket be sufficient
  7. I'm making a propane forge which needs a 8 or 9 inch chamber. The problem is the amount of insulation needed. I've done a bit of research and noticed that most people used a layer of ceramic blanket about an inch thick, a layer of castable refractory and itc 100, my question is how many layers of ceramic blanket and how much castable refractory is necessary to sustain heat, the forge will be a blown propane forge.

  10. If you don't want to help that's fine but I have done the basic research. I know the types of forges, different burners available, what to use for insulation. All I needed was a design I could use and modify for my own needs which where clearly outlined in the first post. What would you classify as "basic research"
  11. First of all there are no classes in the north of Ireland. In fact blacksmithing or bladesmithing is very rare over here, perhaps some in the south. I'm only a young enthusiast looking to learn these techniques and save some money along the way by making the tools. The way I learn is up to me.
  12. M cochran. Good links. My research includes asking questions on these forums. If I see something I don't understand I like to ask people who have more knowledge than me that's how I learn.
  13. The two links provided are atmospheric burners. I need a good design of a forced air burner.also how many burners are needed in a 2ft long forge.
  14. I do blacksmithing in a coal forge and have made a few knives but I want to move onto gas and want to make longer knives or swords. I want to make a gas forge and the burners but need a design and the amount of burners needed.
  15. I'm looking to build a gas forge, it is going to be a forced air forge. The shape is a cylinder and the length is 2ft and the diameter is 1ft with 2 inch of insulation around the circumference. Nothing is made yet in case I need to change the size but I needed to know how many burners would this need to get to welding temperature. I have the ability to make a burner if there is a designs available. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
  16. Hey everyone, I've started building a heat treat oven. I have the shell made and the insulation bricks but I found out there are two types of PID controllers, basic or ramp and sock. I make Damascus and pattern welded knives but want to make move into long swords, I need to know what PID controller is best for this and what is the difference between the two. Another thing is the heating elements. I live in the UK and I can't find them anywhere preferably kanthal A1, kanthal wire can be bought online but I want good quality wire and have them pre twistedtwisted. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
  17. One thing about the motor is that it is an older motor and very large and heavy. I read somewhere on this forum that have more power than what the nameplate says.
  18. Hello everyone. Ive started to build a power hammer for sword making. I have a base made of 3 layers. One is 3/4inchwood, then a layer of thick rubber and 15mm steel sheet on top of that, this is to take the shock out of the hammer. The main beam is 8 inch boz iron bolted to the floor. I want to have an 100lb hammer but I only have a 1hp 1475 rpm single phase motor. I want to know if this motor is powerful enough to lift the hammer weight and if not what size of motor would be needed. I am also using a tire clutch. The motor also needs to move the hammer at a good speed.

    gas forge

    The tools I have are a homemade electronic heat treat oven with a pid controller and keeps a good constant temperature and made a power hammer as well. I have an old coal forge but is desperate hard to maintain and so I want to go gas. For pattern welding, coal is better but I want to try gas but just have never tried or seen one only on internet. I know of blown and atmospheric forges. Atmospheric has no doors whereas blown do and so in atmospheric the sword can be put right through but people say making them are harder than a blown forgeforge as the burner work under a higher pressure. Blown forges are easier to set. I need to know which forge is the best for making long swords and damascus

    gas forge

    I'm looking to make a viking type sword. The center is 3 alternate twisted Damascus rods which are forge welded together on either side is a damasus billet which is not twisted and then all forge welded together forming on piece. The reason I need a longer forge is I want to have all the rods heated up together for forge welding and can I make a longer than normal forge to accommodate this or what forge could I use

    Hi all. I'm looking to make a gas forge for pattern weldingwelding and damascus. The forge needs to be long, about 4 feet. I was wondering which forge (atmospheric or blown) would be better and how many burner would be needed.
