Mine says Yost I don't see any Yost like it but it looks a lot like those Prentiss vises, looks like it can be very handy

please stop reposting obvious, the large pics waste bandwidth, and most of our members pay ber Kb  not per month, and its wasting my time having to delete them

  2. Haven't tried the hot, cold method yet, I have tried just heat, right now it's soaking, I'll give some more patients then I'll look into drilling the knob was pretty boogered up before I got it.

    Greetings 77,

The pin on the top should come out to allow the rear section to pivot. Great vise for uneven gripping.

Do you know if that pin is spring loaded, or how it doesn't come out with you pull it, it's really suck I'm trying to look at my options on how to move it. It's soaking in penetrating oil now.

in the sense that they are jaws...? i see no resemblance other than that.

I noticed that too, the jaws have a design and flow to them like a post vise

The vise has to be close to 100 lbs alone, $150 for the anvil $70 for the vise

  7. Paid 220 including a 120 lb Colombian anvil that's in decent shape. The vise was apart and wouldn't swivel a little heat, patience and grease works like new.

  8. Hi, I picked up this Yost vise it's 6" opens to 10" I got everything working has a broken mounting bracket. I've heard of Yost I can't find anything on dating or on this model # it's a 78, and I was curious on what that knob on the back is for looks like some sort of gig  hooks to it. Any info would be appreciated thank you.

Would a992 steel make a good Anvil? I was looking at a piece of I-Beam that is 710lbs. The measurements are:  Face is 5" thick and the web is 3" thick.

Thank you for any information you have.....

If the web is 3" across and the face is already 5" thick, then you could cut the flanges off, and have5 anvils of differen sizes; look at Brian Brazeal  anvils; they are used with the narrow end and have diferent radii ground into the top face to use as a fuller. If its 710 lbs and a good shape, go for it. if you want more input, post a picture so we can see what you're talking about, Harlow

The 710lbs H beam on eBay right. Unless they changed much in the past 30 years my dad was I ironworker and said they were like butter they used to knock the corners in with a spud wrench. And for $710+ s/h from PA to CA I believe it's too much you could get a decent Anvil or load up at a scrap yard to build the multi teir Anvil mentioned. In case you don't post pictures it's listed all over craigslist on the east coast, blt, phl, de, nj.

Jake: I can't imagine a paint job so offensive it'd have any effect on using that beauty, sure might have to clear an inch two of "paint if you aren't doing anything useful" off the face. Lots of anvils were painted from the factory I believe Soderfors often came painted light gray or silver but that may have been customer request. NO matter, I wouldn't toss it out in the weeds either way. That is a SWEET looking beast.

The 101 Soderfors Mlinn77 just posted looks like factory paint. She's a beauty, almost pristine. I'll bet she'll make your ears ring through muffs and plugs.

This brings up another question does your 334 German pattern ring like a weapon of mass disturbance Jake?

I was told it was repainted, it looked fresh.

  11. My dad always said it's only worth what someone will pay. If your just a straight up collector money is secondary, size and logo is 1st, that's probably the 2nd or 3rd biggest arm and hammer found.

I think it's overpriced at 4g for a user, I'd buy it at $2500 but I'm cheap and I don't like the tourch/stinger marks even though they are small and probably irrelevant. I do suffer from Anvil envy but I completely agree with size being overkill.

Probably not the right place for this but since it was mentioned, unless the 2nd bidder bought it at the price he bid or we know what that 630 HB actually sold for its hard to use that as the "bar". The 2nd bidder had a chance to buy it now cheaper then his 2nd place bid so his original high bid is out the window, understand I'm not saying he wouldn't of paid if he won, but I know I got caught up in the action and felt relieved when I got outbid.

  12. Ok thank you, I was guessing early to mid 1800's too, I wasn't sure if the bronze Bell was a tip off. I've said it before but I'll say it again, the English made a stylish vise.

  13. Hi my dad picked up this old leg vise, I know figuring out a maker is hard to narrow down, and there isn't any markings,  but the bronze bell is different from what I've seen, it looks old English, any guesses on the age?
