  1. charles i use a 7 pound hammer my problem before was lack of heat and lack of knowledge i have the ability to make the heat now (stuid ash gate). So when I get a chance ill have a good attempt at breaking the stuff
  2. Gergely. I bought the 1 3/4" with the plans at trying to reduce it to 1 1/2" as thats the size of my hardie hole. The reason I'm buying the 40 mm is to draw it out a little so its fits the hardie then I can weld on to it. But as you said that big stuff is a huge buzz kill. One day though Ill master it and then might be able to use it. For now I chalk it up to a noob mistake. For now though I'm playing around with 1/2" coil and some old leaf springs I've been given:~)
  3. I have absolutely no idea. I know that even with a good heat its still like hitting a solid not for moving bit of steel
  4. Ooops sorry didnt know I couldnt post ebay links here. I thought it might be handy for a newbie in the UK the iron dwarf yeah I know I bought one a few weeks back and i have to wait till august to check it out.
  5. Ive just ordered 2 meter os 40mm solid square bar £15, a month back a meter of square bright bar 1 3/4 £50. Am I paying to much? What do you pay for steel? Would it be worth while us using the same supplier as much as we can and asking for an IFI discount?
  6. Try the "Workshop Practice Series" from Special Interest Model Books Number 1. Hardening, Tempering And Heat Treatment by Tubal Cain ISBN 978--085242-837-5
  7. When I move home Im gonna have to hunt around the historical societies for places lkike this. Thanks for posting the pictures, I could feel the atmosphere of the place in them.
  8. Saw this up for grabs this morning. Any good to anyone? ebay link removed according to site guidelines.

  10. I had a look and found a few. Theres an agricultural college near where ill be that might be worth a shot
  11. Look in the reference Section here lots of pdf files you can download for free.
  12. im with lawnjockey on this looks like something to put a round edge onto sheet
  13. Ill be in west lothian about 20 miles from edinburgh and 25 from glasgow so im pretty good for city stuff
  14. She goes through the coal at some speed now though. But I love having a heat I can hopefully work with.
  15. Tam Did you manage to find a coal supplier? I found a supplier when i move home. £295 40*25kg bags. This is for bituminous house coal.Anyone know if this is a good deal? https://www.coaldelivery.co.uk/fuel-categories/House-coal/British-House-Coal/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwyoCrBRCl-aa97pKX_t8BEiQAbrs_9GM3scBdKqHg7M2kRw17LXsfqh07ldKLCGMF2uNaLh0aAkvP8P8HAQ
  16. Ok I made a test fix that i think I'll leave in place. I used a fire extinguisher bracket.( The car kind) and a bit of 2 or 3 mm steel plate. Bracket clips on the side of the down pipe nicely (with a little hammer tap) and the little foldy bit holds the plate in place( tight fit though). Now after an hour and a half in front of the forge I'm exhausted with the heat. I can heat 1 3/4" bright mild to orange/yellow in a few mins and 1/2" square takes no time. I am a happy fire bunny today Thank you so much for the advice guys
  17. Preferably one that can sit on a bench. no idea about belt size but id imagine bigger is better (as the actress said to the bishop). I think I read somewhere that 1HP is the minimum size for a grinder so maybe about the same for the sander?
  18. Im Looking at getting a new bench sander, My grinders suck but I can live with that, I've a couple angle grinders that work well. Can anyone recommend a good manufacturer to look at. Ideally id like a belt sander but im open to ideas. The power in the sanders ive seen is usually 500w or less. I need it to be single phase. Also would it be worth looking at a combi grinder/sander style thing?
  19. I'm on the fence unfortunately. Though id love to come will let you know i august for what ever good that is.
  20. I think the problem is the sir supply. Theres no cap on the bottom of the tryuerso the air can escape down as well as up. Power is from a dinky 'hairdryer but I know it blows enough air to melt steel. The only grate I oave I the fire pit is a bit f rebar to hold the coal in.
  21. the 1 1/2" is the size of my hardie so now i can make tools and weld them to the bar and it should fit and work i hope
  22. im planning on getting one of ID forges when i move but for now im toying with the idea of a new forge that i can rework to how i want it.. the on e i have just now has a major flaw.. not enough pressure in the air to really heat it.. i thought if i built a bigger forge i might be able to incorporate better air flow
  23. I finally found a supplier of 1 1/2 square bar so come the end of the month i can get started
