  1. Good call... I'll have to look around for something suitable.
  2. Those look great, the woodworker will be thrilled!
  3. I have not made it over to the Idea Foundry yet; once I'm done finishing my basement I hope to have time to learn some metal work there, maybe offer to teach some wood classes since they seem to only have power tool offerings there. I forget where I saw about leaving the vise a little open, but the thought was that if it is closed tight that if the metal contracts when it gets cold something could crack if the whole thing was under tension. Your recommendation also makes sense... perhaps I will split the difference and leave it just shy of closed. I can't imagine it'd move much.
  4. Hello, I've been lurking for a while after 'the banning upon signup' bug a while back, but I'm all sorted out now. My primary hobby these days is woodworking (also brew and do computer stuff)but I wanted to learn how to make some of my own tools, since I like the old fashioned hand powered ones. I purchased a knife maker's gas forge, Grizzly ASO, and a craigslisted up a post vice. So far I haven't had as much time as I'd hoped, so my adze and nata blades are still waiting to get sharpened and handles made, but I have finished two toothed planing stops. Since winter is rolling back around again now, so long as I wax/oil them up and keep a grill cover on, the anvil and vise should be alright to overwinter outside, yes? The consensus seemed to be that it'd be fine (but to leave the vise open a bit) but I thought I might as well confirm.
