  1. I tried ordering the plans 3-4 weeks ago from Norm and they are not available. I need some asap.Does anyone have a set I can buy ******? Please do not reply telling me where to order. I have tried that option and now cannot wait. I have several projects due very soon. Thanks for any help.
  2. I would buy it. In my experience anvils are always more expensive out west. I have a friend out in New Mexico with a Hay Budden that is cracked at the heel. He has been pounding on it regularly for years with no evidence of further cracking.
  3. I am near Battle Creek,Mi. I am a general blacksmith and also enjoy experimenting with damascus steel and pattern welding. Most of the metal is for knives and other architectural purposes. If you are interested please contact me. It would be nice to meet up and share knowledge.
  4. I gently laid mine on some tires and secured it with ratchet straps. We had no problems. Of course it was not resting on any of the delicate front moving parts.
  5. 165 lb colonial pattern ....$100 125 lb Hay Budden .........$100 124 lb Hay Budden farrier$ free 230 lb Peter Wright ........$ 350 150 lb Peter Wright ........$ 100 200 lb Columbian ...........$ 200 299 lb Peter wright .........$ 500 650 lb London pattern .....$ 500! 143 lb Peter Wright ......$ Free 378lb unknown .............$ Free 31 lb paragon ..............$ 75 140 lb Mouse Hole .........$ 125 125 lb Peter Wright .......$ 75 All bought within the last two years. Don't get anxious when looking for an anvil.Put the word out and wait. A new one pops up often. After my experience the price of an anvil is dictated by location and desperation. In my opinion Ebay is not an accurate measure of prices. Almost anything goes way too high these days on that site. Out west smithing tools are priced about 25-50% higher than here back east.
  6. I was buffing a pattern welded blade and it slipped off the wheel. The blade hit the nut that holds on the wheel and dented the heck out of my blade. you never know when todays latest prized project will be ruined or scarred before your eyes.
  7. I have anvils from 20 to 650 lbs and always wanted a bigger anvil. Now I have an appreciation for the 75-100 lb anvils. they can be moved easier and get a lot of work done just as well. You have a nice anvil and did a good job dressing it from the picture. Last year I paid $75 for a 31 lb swedish Paragon. Being a quality anvil in decent shape it was worth every $. Have fun pounding!
  8. I am in need of some plans or dimensions for the rolling mill. Thanks
  9. I found two different names. there is about 100-130 feet of blade. Some is 11" most is around 8" and 20 feet of 4". The names on the big stuff are "The Simonds Saw" and "? York Saw" Both are old. I found a date etched in the simonds 3/23/89.
  10. I would like to get a used cliff carroll forge to forge weld in.If you have a better suggestion I am open to suggestions. Thanks
  11. Call me at 269-209-1288

  12. Thanks Ecart I will check it out today. I wouldn't call that arrogant more like a qualified answer. If you have been around these that much it is safe to say you know your blades! That's the kind of knowhow I appreciate. -Banjoe
  13. Congratulations. May you have many happy and safe hours of forging .
  14. I just paid $1800.00 for one. I had to replace the spring ($70.00)and put new bushings in. It runs like a sewing machine now. 2000.00 seems like a fair price if it is not worn too bad.If you cannot do the machining work yourself it can get costly. The people at little giant are very nice but the parts are expensive. I would really take some time and go over it and see it run. I have been looking at hammers regularly for two years. It never fails that a new one pops up every 2 weeks or so. Some sell very cheap and others are priced based on the current price of gold. Of course the latter never sell. Good luck
  15. Wow thanks for all the replies! My guess is this is an older blade. Where would I send it to be tested? I also just bought 3 -52" sawmill blades. I hope these will be nice for throwing knives. Any guesses on what these are made of ?
  16. I have just been given 36' of 8" bandsaw blade. This is a big machine to see in person. The plan is to use the metal for some pattern welding. I am wanting to know if there is a standard type of steel for these blades? I do not know who manufactured it. Thanks
  17. Frosty I like that cover! Thats the direction I want to go. Thanks for the photo. -Banjoe
  18. I have access to some 4140 and a2 pieces big enough to machine dies out of. What are your thoughts on these steels? The owner wants 15 cents a lb (scrap pricing).
  19. I too am interested in first hand witnesses of spring and arm failures concerning these style of hammers.
  20. I just rebuilt my 25 lg and it now runs like clock work. I did measure the dies and found the lower is 2-1/4". I would like to find a used lower drawing die in better shape. The budget was spent on the rebuild. Also I would like to cover the spring only. Have any of you found an alternative to the big ugly cages. I know they work but to me personally they look awful. Thanks for any leads.
  21. Hello I have experimented with cable a lot over the last year. One of the many lessons learned was check it for carbon content before you work for hours for nothing. I found some nice 1" cable that turned out mild. I could not harden it at all. Now I harden and temper a small sample before I waste my time making a new letter opener.
  22. I have just unloaded the anyang in the garage. Do any of you have a manual? I want to be sure to set up the anvil correctly. The friend who owned the hammed threw in a huge anvil to get it out of his garage. I think the anvil must weigh between 4-500 lbs. That was a pleasant surprise. I always hear of those kind of stories and finally I am in one!
  23. I need the weight of the hammers according to the numerical designation of the hammer. Example.. No.4 is 75 lbs? no.5 is 100 lbs ? Thanks (These were a guess)
  24. I recently picked up an older Anyang 41-40 hammer missing the dies. Do any of you have any spares you would like to part with? I see james has them new at $425.00. I would prefer to get a set cheaper(used). If i can locate a set to measure we have a great machinist friend who has offered to teach me some machining skills while we make a set together. This seemed best so I can make my own in the future. I have access to H13 round 4.6" dia x 5" long. This hammer has not been run in 15 years. The hammer is a two piece so set up looks a bit tricky. Any advice or comments are appreciated. I have talked to James on the phone and must add he has been very gracious with info and his time.
  25. I Moved to El Paso, Texas last fall from Michigan. Soon after I was settled in I met a guy named Jose "Pepe"Gomez in Las Cruces ,NM. He was absolutely awesome from the get go. He offered to help me with just about any needs concerning metal working,Blacksmithing and knife-making. He showed me how to build my first gas forge, run a power hammer and too many others to list. My knife-making was excelled greatly because of his willingness to share time and experience. Jose introduced me to the local SWABA group and I was eager to join. You wont find many others like Jose. I wanted to encourage any of you to get to know him if you get the chance. He is a great representative of the metal arts and much more than that a great person. It is encouraging to be a part of a smithing community that contains so many selfless and friendly artists. Blacksmiths are some of the most generous and genuine people I have known. Thanks guys for the forum and also thank you Jose!
