  1. Cool! I was pretty sure i was dead wrong!
  2. Too true frosty the ulu is diffinitly desendant of thr first stone tools i did not take it as criticisim i was simply agreeing with you as i did not really get a chance to use them before i delivered them. one of the blades was more simicircular than the other i liked it better. I can see them as being good for leatherwork also thanks again evryone Du
  3. Simple ..... elegant....... beautiful... i love them what was the title of that eairler post i would love to learn that bluing trick? du
  4. The have the right belly to slice like one the hand position is a little wierd i intended to make more of a full circle the gentelmen i made tgem for where happy will probably be used for skinning and caping white tailed deer they where thankyou gifts to two retired machienists in the family who gave me far too much tooling and indicators gages .... caint really repay them with only a couple of knives but they where happy if anyone else has a good way to turn corners with a drill please share i would be glad to know another take on this ? i drilled a 1/2 inch hole 1” deep at a right angle to the bolster then a 3/8” hole at a 45 degree angle to that about 1 1/2 “ deep then the same at about 60 degrees 2” or so deep theese mesurments where worked out to allow just enough clearnce for the tang in those areas Relieved corners and created flats for drilling where necissary with a roteray burr the burnt the rest other than splitting the blank and re gluing i could not think of another way to do it du
  5. Thanks yes the tang is roughly half the handle length the real fun is hollowing out a handle around a blind corner i hollowed as far as i could then forged a 1/4 square to the same profile as the tang and burnt out just the last 1/2 inch or so then cleaned up all the char and olil with a slow speed carbide burr. bright side cocabolo dosent split to easy du
  6. Pair of ulu’ish knives diffrentialy tempered 1095 brass and cocobolo left them in the etch a little too long but they ended up really pretty anyway du
  7. It looks like turning the shaft would cause the weaights to lift tgen drop could it be an old hammer mill for crushing ore? Just a guess i really have no idea du
  8. Looks great! Awesome deal i am sure the old gal will serve you well
  9. It is true i have never set that particular garment on fire but i can say both times i have set fire to myself in the shop were with angle grinders and cutoff disc’s. watch where them sparks fly at least you now have another funny story to tell around tge campfire du
  10. Top tools difinetly i have seen tools like this used like a flatter to remove hammermarks when making your own round stock and also for making half round/collaring stock. du
  11. Woodrow that sounds extrodinarilly bad for ones sinuses just throwing out one of my favorite uses
  12. Wow!!! ohsa would have fits. it really is quite amassing how we used to do things not that long ago
  13. It is most diffinitly a center drill but why limit yourself to lathe operation? If ever you are having trouble with small diamiter drillbits walking ( dispite center punching the hole first) they are great in a drill press or mill to spot the holes before drilling the final hole as the thick crosssection behind the buisness end keeps the tool right where you want it. Dead on center . Just don’t drill to far if you don’t want the countersink. du
  14. I dont think horseshoes are hardenable matreial? the first and fith look good for blacksmith utility knives when you get into exotic hardwood, horn, bone, ivory, brass, bronze, copper, silver, mokume-gane........ then you will know you are addicted to knifemaking lol good work keep us posted
  15. In the last 2 months at work i have seen a 1000lb bar cut a sling and drop 5 feet to tge floor a electromagnet loose power due yo a faulty safety latch ( dropping a 4000lb plate about 4’) and about 10,000 lbs of steel bars slide sideways and fall about 12’ lefr a hell of a dent in the floor all three incidents where expirenced operators/ riggers who became complacent in thier safety pratices thankfully nobody was injured but a few pair of BVD’S know tge weaight of what you are lifting, know tge capacity of your rigging(knots cut this in half or less. Remember, Remember , Remember When you drop a load .... don’t be where it will end up that 4000lb plate bounced 6” and hit tge floor twice never be under a load!!! Allways leave yourself an escape route. Never be where the load is going to go WHEN you drop it du
  16. I got my start by outfitting myself in a simular manner if you have the money by all means if you see it as a value then it is. Mind that since i bought the basics i have built my own treadle hammer all kinds of tongs anvil tooling stands racks dies....... there is nothing wrong with hitting the fast forward switch with a little $$$ but you will forever be making tools you need that is most of the fun! du
  17. Look into galvanic corrosion there is a whole list of dissimilar metals that will corrode each other when in contact ( usually also requiring water or some kind of electrolyte ) as the differences in the electron configs of the two metals makes a battery. The most common example of this would be a copper pipe fitting screwed into a steel pipe fitting the copper will corrode overtime until 3am in the morning it fails and floods your bathroom!!! ( this happened to me once courtesy of the previous owner of my house). in the case of a knife we dont usually soak them in water for long periods. And your solder is actually what is in direct contact with the opposing metals so we rarely see this problem in cutlery or jewellery see also https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galvanic_corrosion du
  18. Just a wild idea as i have no expierence in theese matters but would it work to heat the screwbox up with a torch to low red heat hopefully quickley enough that the screw inside stays cool enough to act like a tool and push the damage out as it is turned out? Or is this stripped screwbox /broken screw ville?
  19. It is more that you pay a premium for anything less than a full length in the steel industry smaller hotrool bars will be stocked in a 20’ stock length It is fairly common pratice to charge the cost of the whole bar if a customer wants a partial as tge steel supplier dose not want to track hundreds of short drops in thier invintory i suggest trying the scrap yard to purchase by tge pound or if you are speaking to a steel supplier ask what a stock lengh is and what it costs ? It may supprise you to find it is the same price as tge 3’ short bar
  20. It is possible someone got a bunch of offcut scrap from a shop that dose not save it as i work in a toolsteel warehouse if i rescue anything from tge scrap hopper i only pay the price the scrap dealer gives us i once bought 100 8” pieces of 1/2 square 6150 for $4.50. it helps evrything in the building is colorcoded by alloy but the shipping cost would make this silly cheap. good luck du
  21. Funny this knife did loose an inch to a stress fracture in the tip that was not visable untill i had it at a 300 grit finish ( i dont remember dropping it) lol soni had to regrind and undo all that pretty polish work grrrr. chopped up a bunch of veggies for dinner the other day and she still shaves like a straight razor better than my commertial vg 10 chefs knife can do ^.^
  22. I have one that is similar but in much better condition do not know if it is a correct term but i prefer to it as my broad hatchet or hewing hatchet the blade is chisle ground and right handed and perfect for removing large sections of waste stock when carving middle sized (firewood) into useful implements like glutts and mauls pair one with a club and froe and you have a nice start on a basic colonial carpendry kit du
  23. Trugrit.com has norton belts tgat go up to 3000 grit after that you can go to a cork belt in lew of a buffer provided you remove all privous scratches along tge way a piece of scrap silk and some jewlers ruge work well after this ....... if you are a masochist enjoy du
  24. I don’t know yet as i havent out tge finish edge on her to see what edge retendion is like but i was experimenting with 0-6 as i heard edge retendion is awesome
