Reeltree replied to Mark Ling's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
Beefed up an old 12 ton shop press to 20 tons. 3 pieces of heavy wall square stock welded into them selfs keeping one side completely flat onto each other. Added a 1/2" plate on the bottom. -

Well, wood wuck,, me being the pessimist I am,,( is the glass half full or half empty,, it depends on if you are filling it up or pouring it out),, I would state shipping was already paid the first time. You had nothing to do with it being defective, not as stated in advertisement so forth so on,,, Ideally it could be scraped and forego any shipping, Anywho,Im just venting, been to a county Board of Supervisors meeting tonight, its amazing just how slow the wheels can turn.

If in fact the reputable online retailer is a contracted , licensed , legal or (how ever you wish to state) dealer for Ridgid, I would defiantly deal with the online store to cover all return cost. Also apprise Ridgid , as you have, of your experience. It would be up to the online retailer to get any adjustments from Ridgid. If you have any blacksmith or metal crafters associations in your area that could possibly inspect the anvil and issue a letter on its current condition , that may be useful also. And if paid by credit card and being an online purchase they may b able to help.

The top has what looks like grain running through it, suspect. The sides looks to have excessive texture , and the logo is way off centered and not very defined, My final analyses,, a knock off counterfeit.

Made a couple new drifts, perfer the 3/4" than the 1". Will give the 1" a try on thicker stock and see what happens -
ok,, I guess you know not to leave it standing alone unattached very long,, if knocked over and valve damaged it will become a projectile .

Help with this Anvil/aso?
Reeltree replied to Matthew2's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
I see leaving the welded on base plate and grinding off the side plates. A vertical grain wooden stand and use the holes in the base plate to lag it onto the stand. -
Look into some gas forges, you may find something to you liking cheaper, more compact, a bit cleaner and you can find propane most anywhere. Just some food for your thought.

The good thing about coal , it is like fishing in the rain, the fish don't mind getting wet, just keep some in a dry container for immediate usage.

Try asking around where they do the spray in bed liners, will probably give all they have laying around to you. A big floor freezer works nice for a more permanent dispensary , cut an opening on the side with a sliding door to fill a bucket,

Answered an ad for a $20 hydraulic cylinder with hoses and got to looking at the fellows other stuff. He is liquidating and heading to South America. Already sold a Hay. Bunden 400# and 25 ton little giant a couple months back. He had just collected these items over the years. However he did stuff like Das and Aus " old stuff art" ? Alot of put together figures and creations all over the place. I eyed the swage block and vice laying against the side of a building. Looked as if had been there since he had aquired them. Im known to be tight as the bark on a hickory tree but I didn't haggle to much this time. He has some equipment to unload soon and I am hoping he will call me as indicated. Also has a solid steel spool. Approx. 4' tall x 3' wide. I dropped 120 for the three items. Don't let the hole in the middle fool you. It is cut out of solid steel. Must weigh at lest 250# if it weighs an ounce. Was all me and another strapping fellow could do to lift it up four foot on to the truck .

This did not follow me home, the 20 oz bottle for a size reference. A guy said his father worked at the plant during the 60's-70's when they made them and painted green with a grill layed over the pan and sold as bbq grills. $ 69.99. It has all the correct casting marks on each side , Buffalo Forge, the blower was freed and had a mini turuye. The blower being so small I could only get a whisper of air up into the pan as " the guy" said it was all that was needed to get the charcoal going. I'll let you decide.

Scrounging thru the scrap pile for some 1" pipe and came upon an old boom stand. Some paint had scraped off and reviled it to be made of solid brass. Read in a previous posting awhile back that some of the tomahawks of old were made from brass. Might give it a whirl. -
