  1. Does John Newman still cast trunion style swage blocks? I can't find anyone who can answer this question
  2. Yes and thank you. I reallydon't want to use this anvil, being what it is. I'd rather see it go to a collection somewhere to be appreciated. I justwanted to check the rebound incase someone asked. Seeing the rebound on the Samson was fantastic compared to the Mousehole. Again thank you. I have a scare which is testimony to those super sonic chips. Rich
  3. I read somewhere a ball bearing dropped from ten inches will give you an estimated rebound. Using a tape measure anddropping from ten inches the bearing bounced between nine and nine and a half over the entire anvil face. Does this mean 90-95% rebound? This is the possible Samson I've been asking about. Even with the partial break the bearing bounced the same. The MouseholeI use daily only bounced between five and seven inches. Just curious Rich
  4. Hey all, Being a complete and total novice, I was looking for a larger anvil. Found one nearby. Turns out to be a large Samson . I thought it was just an anvil needing minor repair work. Like my Household's. There's another public group I visit with a small following. Someone mentioned I should contact a collector of Anvils. I use the Anvils I have. This is supposed to be one of the largest Samson's known. I don't want to damage a piece of history So doesanyone know of a collector that would possibly be interested in a larger Samson? Rich
  5. Whatever the buyer is willing to pay. Ibelieve this one will go to a collector I need a large anvil to use. Was going to repair this
  6. I've been told I just found a Samson Anvil right down the street. Saved it from the scrap dealer. Haven't weighed it yet I'm guessing 200+lbs. What cananyone tell me about the supposed rarity of these Anvils
  7. Hey all, I'm looking for another Wv Blacksmith looking to purchase square stock or any other steel from Mont Levine in Fairmont. Apparently they have a minimum order of $300 and quite frankly that's a bit much for what I have plans for. I have need for a small quantity of both round and square stock, was thinking maybe we could split the cost for what we need. Or, if anyone knows where I can purchase small quantities of stock, that informationwould be much aappreciated. Rich
  8. I'm sure there is a proper place to post this question, but I'm not sure which one. I've visited quite a few websites of Blacksmiths, most claim they use wrought iron. I can only find mild steel. The only place I've found so far is in the UK. Is there a supplier in the US, that sells actual wrought iron? And if so, Would someone please point me in the right direction? Rich
  9. Hey everyone, I was here a few year's ago under a different name which escapes me. I think it was LurchWv@bjs. Just don't remember. I have finally figured out a lot of techniques. Even built a homemade powerhammer. Still using a pre-1790 mousehole for my primary anvil. I've made and sold a few Damascus knives forged from Chainsaw Chains. I have found myself at the point where I realized I need more stuff. Bigger forge, better anvil more knowledge. And I've been nominated for America's Worst Neighbor. ( powerhammer) I thirst to create. Be prepared for an onslaught of questions Rich So, prepar
