  1. Finally finished krusty rusty dusty lol . Havent got to forge yet it hits around 160 bpm from what I've calculated. I went ahead and bought a new 2 hp motor which powers it great . I fixed all the play in the ram and actually plan to add about 20 lbs. To the ram . It weighs about 28 lbs. As is . I plan to bolt 6 by 6 s wood together and make a base and add weight my anvil weighs 260lbs. . Hits hard from what I can tell but i will let u know after a test run on steel.
  2. Here are some dies I made up today out of s7 tool steel . Thank goodness for angle grinders cauz this stuff was HARD LOL.BUT I think they shall do well for the moment I'm gona make fuller dies next for stretching and fullering hammer heads
  3. This is true DD and I was thinking of some way to shim it for the moment . It will aggravate me not having it right. It seem like when its on the upstroke that the spring binds a little on the roller bolts. But I haven't greased the ram at all yet til I get all the dies and welding done.
  4. Actually since I've worked on this thing the ram wasn't that hard to make so if it wears out in a few months oh well . Il go ahead and build new ram with plastic guides. I also thought about putting some bolts through side of ram and maybe take out the tiny bit of looseness but I'm hoping the small space will be filled with grease. I'm just glad to have it this far along I've tried to do everything right so the spring isn't stuck in my brain while giving it a test run . Lol
  5. Ok I've been working on my hammer when i get a chance which hasn't been often but I've got it all ready to go except mounting the motor which I have . My question is I found a piece of square tubing METAL and it fit my ram perfect with barely a 1/16 of slop . So how long do you think this will last I plan on ordering uhmv plastic from mcmastercarr but until then I made the ram guide with grease fittings so maybe it won't be to harsh on the ram if I constantly grease it with high temp grease . Here are some pics please let me know and also after I make the dies there will be 6" between them is that enough to effectively forge hammers or drifts
  6. I'm pretty sure that's considered a shoers hammer kind of similar to a rounding except one end is a square face and one round . You can look at blacksmiths depot and they have the same looking hammer for Sale.
  7. Whoever had all those was equipped to do some hot cutting and now you are hey and you could sell one for 15 and be ahead with the rest. And the flatter that's a great bonus piece . Nice find for sure must of been a granny with no idea what they were for (-:
  8. Man that thing makes you appreciate the old dewalt angle grinder in a whole new fashion . It would have to be soft metal to grind and you would have arms of steel after working that modified cake mixer all day long
  9. Well you could always maybe check with closest scrapyards for larger truck axles or large machinery pins and the cost part of doing it that way is a lot less. But as far as a striker go's I've found it super hard to forge tools like that alone or without a power hammer if solo.but it can be done with a few more heats and motivation
  10. Yes thomas that is very true about ebay but I was just trying to find info on the hammer and that's only place I found anything even close to his pics . I have hammers that are similar but are not ten pounders
  11. I did google it and found some warranteed hammers on ebay and some say blacksmith qnd some say railroad hammers but I did see where the company name was WARRENTEED OREGON so most likely american made and best bet is to work the peen down and use away and get many more years out of it .
  12. No 85-8 isn't a number for any american steels or not that I'm aware of . Its probably a serial or item number of when the hammer was made. But it looks like a good smithing hammer what is the weight on it. And the peen actually looks to be pretty pointy maybe you could sand it to be a little more useful
  13. Not sure about military but those are kind of rare to find I see them at sales sometimes I have one that's similar I found at scrapyard and had to take some of the flat side off to square up the end . Did you google any warren teed hammers
  14. yes this is very sweet how would you even know how to charge for work that intricate. you should go for a patent on that design

  16. heres my first build of a rusty style hammer its been fun building the frame i have everything to build it except pillow block bearing and im trying to figure out how to make a linkage on the motor end and spring end because it has to befree spinning to rotate with thr motor spins if anybody can help with this let me know
  17. Yea give them to a beginner like me send them by the box fulls . LOL ( -:', and frosty that was funny i would hide channel locks too but i have used vise grips when punching so the punch would be solid and i also tryed some store bought punches but if you get them red and quench in water they go bye bye . after the quench there like glass
  18. Heres my vise i bought with no post had to weld round stock back on for a leg and made the stand today i dont know how ive got by without it vice in the forge ive crambed stuff in the hardie hole to bend
  19. Ok i tryed to take some drift i had and capsule shape them a little more the top one in pics is stil round i didnt flatten it yet . I AM exited to make another hammer now that im workin out the kinks
  20. The fullers are actually harbor freight hammers grinded down with pieces of 4140 round stock tig welded to the end . but they are very efficient

Yea thats something that i had never heard of is soapstone and now after reading several forums i am gona try to make a few more drifts and make them the capsule shape a little more than mine are now because during the first few hammers i was trying to make i stuck the drift and had to beat it out with a sledge and it killed the hammer body just getting it out

Hair ballz i know what your saying about the scrapyard we have on here in asheville nc and i get all of my good car springs and axles for makings hammers and tongs for pennies on the dollar it actually makes me happy to stockpile it especially after seeing what a piece of 4140 cost to buy online. Makes me feel sorry for people who do have to spend a fortune to forge
  23. Here are the pics i was trying to post and my new striking anvil and cupping tool i made last week and first rounding hammer i made not so good but a try anyway and its very satisfying to forge with stuff you make .

Frosty when u say quench the drift do you mean just dip the small side of the drift that is out one side of the hammer when forging without actually getting hammer wet . am i understanding correctly and my drifts seem to be very smooth i worked them on a belt sander til good and flat but once again im sure i take quite a few more heats than most people be a little newer to forging but im learning and im trying to get a rusty hammer built so i can forge the cheeks in a little less time than striking ( -:
  25. i have tried to add my pictures but seems to not attach the file and brian everybody relates to these as your tools . I guess since you have seem to perfected all the the details in forging this very versatile hammer that not to imention is a sweet looking hammer. and you probably work on these tools more than anybody else. Your tools actually made me passionatte about forging and on days im not working i thrive to work on technique more and more.
