  1. it would make a good dog head hammer just the way it is and is ideally sized for blade projects.

    Awwww  yeeeaahh.

    That's a great idea. Thanks!

Don't worry about metal you have got this will make a very good hammer, this steel is made for cyclic loads and wouldn't gonna fail.

For a 4 lb pound hammer all i am worry about is that you will end up with too long hammer, so try to forge it concave shape on hardy hole upside down after final drift placed inside eye, i think it will help to reduce length

Ok thanks for that advice as well. There may be enough material to make a couple of things.

Great comments, gave me a lot to consider.

    Thanks everybody.

  2. Good Morning,

If you are trying to make your first Hammer out of that Spindle, It is possible but you will have to upset it quite a bit.

Kind of a Hard Lesson for a "cheap Hammer". The Steel will work, It is made for taking a pounding in the Tractor. Using "Found Steel" for something like a Hammer, is a bit of a waste of Time. What are the Heat Treatment Tables??

"Can" is a question of Ability. Yes you "Can" make a Hammer out of the Spindle.

    Hey,

I get what you're saying. Seems like I should try to make something worth while from this though.  I'm not in a hurry so I guess I'll research it some more.

    Thanks for the advice.

  3. okay, you brought up the subject......zombies.......do you cut off the head or shoot between the eyes or use C4 ??

"Willful Suspense of Disbelief" engaged... ;)

I do enjoy some "Walking Dead" so I have to go with the traumatic brain damage. That's why I liked the spike. C4 would be fun to have, probably have to save it for the "living" marauders though.

"It's just for fun" I can't say that without sounding like "Nacho Libre"

  4. I like it. :)  might be a lil hard to control the axe part with a small round handle. Could probably weld another portion of bar to the handle area for more stability for using as an axe. Otherwise it may want to glance to one side or the other when the axe hits a vampire zombie coconut

Hey after messing around with it I took your advice and went ahead and added a "handle".  I went with a section of pipe. It's still hot but felt alot better even with a welding glove. I did the crappy looking welds on purpose to keep it in character ;)

Anyway since you said you liked it I thought I would post this.

    Thanks

  5. Hopefully I haven't already asked this, but I did search.

I've got this piece of a steering mechanism to an old international tractor. That main shaft is about 1 3/4" in dia. Would this make good hammer material and if so anyone have an idea how much would I need to cut off for a 4lb rounding hammer? The other end is kind of tapered. I thought about making a drift or something out of it.

    thanks gurus !

  6. Thanks for the advice. I did put a piece of scrap plate under it after I got a good line. I need to make something a little more secure though.

You might want to look at "The Master BladeSmith " by JPH  Chapter The Spear  starting page 181  (JPH =Jim Hrisoulas)   has some general information that you might find helpful.

thanks for the heads up on the book can never have enough info.

thanks I had thought about doing something like that. My idea was to get a small section of pipe a make it kinda oval then put it over the bar and pinch the ends around the bar then weld it. But I decided against it to try to keep the weight down. I might do something with it one day.

Someone suggested paracord, I'm not feeling that though. Seems like it would get slick with zombie coconut guts ;)

  7. Hey all,

I made a pretty fun zombie apocalypse tool. I used an old crowbar and a piece of a weird bush hog type blade. The blade was short, wide with a "dog leg" bend in it and had two mounting holes but it was very hard, didn't get a pic of it. Anyway, I thought it came out decent, thought I'd show ya'll. And just in time for Halloween! The forged spike is about 9"+- .  The blade is inspired by one in the Elder Scrolls video game. Its basically a short halberd.

It really helped out with my #vampirezombiecoconuts  infestation.

  8. have one, those pics were after some rough grinding on the wheel, hit it with some 220 on a disk to clean it up a bit.

no intended purpose, just wanted to try my hand at making a hammer, marcy now has a diagnal to use, were gonna tag team another and make a bigger one next.

finishedish, not the best handle but it will due.

    Great looking hammer!

  9. This is the grinder

    2x42.jpg

I'm just not sure the bottom wheel was intended to be used as a contact wheel to be honest. But I have used it as such and some times its hard to do any finish work on it because there is no "cushion" and it will leave some deeper grind marks than I like. So I thought if I could get at least a little bit of a layer of urethane in there it would help that out.

I half way looked at trying to replace the wheel but I think it would be more trouble than its worth. Probably just be better off building a decent grinder. Basically I'm just trying to put that off ;)

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  10. finally got around to making another one, used 3/8th square and rolled the top over so it could be made into a necklace

Good job on it. I guess there was a noticeable difference working with the bigger material this time?

  11. They look like farrier tongs to me by the round jaws. Maybe just short versions....

That's kind of what I thought as well. But the jaws are completely flat. I thought that farriers tongs usually had a divot  or dent in them?

  12. I couldn't really tell how they might be used for buttons. I didn't know they were soldered. I thought might could use the for small stuff but I think they're too short.

    Thanks

  13. so i decided i would give myself a break from all the large stock i like to play with and try something small. i didnt realize how small untill i started the project tho lol. I didnt have any square stock so i took some 3/8" round and made it square(ish),was probably 1/4in square and then did the normal split cross stuff. after two failed attempts at splitting it with a chisel i finally gave up and got the hacksaw. never realized how hard it it to hold onto something so small lol. guess i need to make some pick up tongs or something to hold small stock better.

Well here it is anyways, pretty ugly but owell, was a good way to end the forging session

I think it looks good, especially for such a small stock in a coal forge. It would look good on some leather cord. I have had one already cut in 1/4" for a couple of weeks that I haven't gotten around to opening up yet.  I'll probably "cheat"  and try it in the gasser when I go to work on some others :)

Those in Spanky's pic are really nice.

  14. I make dishing hammers from the domed headed RR bolts.  Use a slitter and a drift to make the eye for the handle.  I like to put the eye way back in the threaded section and then curve the bolt so that it follows the natural swing arc and hits dead on---good for deep dishing!  You can also use them for tooling for a screwpress.

That sounds like a good idea. I will have to go kick around where I found these an see if there are anymore. Do you know what kind of steel those bolts are made out of?

I'd love to have a screw press, or any kind of press :)
