    Price range

I have never been to a farm auction that didn't have a post vise. I have about six and haven't paid over 45$
  2. So I want to start teaching the Metalworking merit badge in my troop. It all seems pretty easy except for one requirement which I have copied and pasted below. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them. a. Work-harden a piece of 26- or 28-gauge sheet brass or sheet copper. Put a 45-degree bend in the metal, then heavily peen the area along the bend line to work-harden it. Note the amount of effort that is required to overcome the yield point in this unworked piece of metal. b. Soften the work-hardened piece from requirement 3a by annealing it, and then try to remove the 45-degree bend. Note the amount of effort that is required to overcome the yield point.
  3. I don't know where I'm eastern nc you live but the foss recycling in havelock seems to have a steady supply of railroad track for .50 cents a pound. They also have lots of scrap there for a pretty decent price. Found a post vice there last time I went. If the one in havelock is to far the ones in Jacksonville and Lagrange also sell scrap to the public.
  4. Funny you should say that because I am about to call some people down the road who have some run down sheds on there property and see if we can work out some kind of deal. As far as the concrete I was planning on sinking the post in the concrete but as Charles pointed out that would actually make it worse so I think I will just sink the treated posts into the ground. I will look into the ice boards they seem like a pretty neat idea. I looked into the dirt tire wall but I think I will go with a different route. Thank you guys for all of the great responses.
  5. Do you have any pictures of the tire and dirt wall I am having a hard time picturing it.
  6. Jim that is my dream shop. Unfortunetly I understand what you are sayin and I don't have the time or equipment to really set it up safely/effectively so I think if am going to use it to build a lawn tractor or something similar.
  7. Thank you guys for all of the responses I was thinking of using it to run multiple machines ie a drill press, belt sander, grinder, band saw, fans
  8. Well at the moment I have no way of running electricity to where I blacksmith so I was hoping that a could use this to run some sort of machinery that might be useful. I figured I would see if I can find a use for it and if I can't I can always just turn around and sell it.
  9. I am considering going with concrete And will defiantly look into it.
  10. I'm confused as to what you mean by line shaft equipment. As far as the powerhammer/fans I looked into the powerhammer but I'm not sure if I have the means to make one and it seems like alt of power to just run fans.
  11. Me and my dad decided to scrap our old riding mower but ot before taking out the engine and all of the wiring. The engine is 18 hp. My question is is there any way to use the engine in my smithy to aid in blacksmithing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
  12. Thank you for all of the replies. I have decided to just buy the treated posts. I am however going to try to find some free planks off of craiglist in order to keep the cost down.
  13. I was planning on treating the underground sections but I'm not sure with what. The ground where it is going to go is always at least a little damp except for mid summer. I will try to find out what is used for fence posts locally. I am hoping to find som cedar wood because I heard it is rot and bug resistant.
  14. So I have wanted to build a smithy for a while because my current operation has become a mud pit. I am thinking a horse shed like design. My question is I would like to just use tree trunks as posts. Is that possible or wood it rot to fast.
  15. Sorry I was unclear. It says hay budden Brooklyn ny, ny Then it says 53. I was talking about the manufacturing number.
  16. So I picked up a #53 at the flea market. I picked it up for 125$. My question is, is this a rare anvil, I have never seen one before. I am also having trouble finding the I.d mark on it. Where should I look on the anvil.
  17. I'm sure you already know this but anvils do pop up at the local flea markets from time to time. That's where I found my small hay budden.
  18. On an unrelated note in the first picture their seems to big a big seem between what I assume is the face plate and the rest of the anvil is that normal.
  19. I also saw these anvils on Craigslist I thought they where kind of pricey. I would just keep looking they come up often enough aroud here that I would save your money. That beig said if you really want an anvil and don't want to wait any longer then by all means get it.
  20. So I have been looking for 55 gallon drum for a while now and can't seem to find one that is safe. I have found a couple but I had no idea what was inside so I was afraid to use it. So what I am asking is there any kind of place that would have old oil drums they are not using any more.
  21. I got ten feet of black pipe for free from Home Depot. Someone had it cut and only needed half so they just gave it to me. I know you already bought the pipe but it's thought for next time.
  22. Well I called all of the companies and none of them had fire clay. So now I'm back on the hunt for some, baileys pottery has some for sale has any one ever used there's.
  23. Well I finally made it out to the fair last night. It was great they had a whole shop dedicated to blacksmithing. I talked to every one in the shop and joined the local blacksmithing organization. Unfortunately they did not have any for sale but they did tell me of a couple of places that's have them every once in a while so I will check those.
  24. I went to the farmers market today but it was pretty much all produce. It was also late so most of the vendors had left.
