Darren, I hope things turn around for you and your family. It's always tough losing a parent, and then having to deal with the natures wrath....If I ever get into serious metal work I'll definitely be looking your way to buy a forge.
Where's a good place to find old band saw blades? I've been looking at the pawn shops and flea markets and I haven't had any luck...I really like the knife...Excellent Work!
I've got a 1/4" thick piece of O-1 to work with. Is that too thick? I've never made a knife before so this is my first try. Do I need to do anything special to it before I cut out my blade?
I guess a little more info would have been helpful. I'm interested in both forging and stock removal. Right now though I want to use the stock removal method. I don't have any experience doing this kind of thing so I'm pretty clueless. My main thing is I can't figure out what type of metal to use or where to get it. I'm wanting something that will keep a pretty good edge on it and be durable.
I've been wanting to make my own knives for quite a while but I have been having trouble getting started. I'm new to all of this so I don't know a whole lot. I've been trying to find some steel in my area (Springfield/Bolivar Mo) but I can't seem to find anyone that has anything. Do you guys have any suggestions on how I could get started? I'd really like to get this thing rolling. Any and all help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Jon
My name is Jon. I live in Bolivar Missouri. I stumbled on this site while I was searching the internet for beginning knife making tutorials. I figured this would be a good place to get info...so I signed up. I'm completely knew to all of this but I'm very interested in learning about working with metal to make knives and whatever else. So any info you feel like giving me will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
