  1. Well the tongs are done and are alot stronger than my bad attempt at tongs i made using thin stainless tube and round punchings. Pics will be tonight after work.
  2. Hey Frosty you mentioned using kitty litter for my forge floor, is there any specific ingredient to look for?
  3. Put on some pictures so we can have a look.
  4. Nice shop there. I wish i had such a big shop lol. Mine is but a saw horse at the moment.
  5. It is rather fun but yup safety 1st
  6. Wow alot of answers i didnt expect, thanx guys, and another reason for me feeling guilty was because i always try my best to do things the hardest and slowest way to gain skill and most importantly patience, being a big fishing person helps with that too. I try to put myself in the blackswith way of doing things but clearly that isnt 100 percent possible, but one can only attempt it.
  7. It was rather fas to cut out and didnt leave much slag to chip off.
  8. And i bet the time it would take to get a pair sent to me i could have learnt how to forge a pair. No worries im almost done and its costed me nothing so far, so im happy.
  9. Yup. Any gas with wierd colors i stay wel away from. Im going to simply sit the ingot i made on the forge floor with a copper tip or 2 ontop of it and as so as the tips melt and become level with the rest of the molten pool i will shut off the gas, quench and sand to see.
  10. Haha the results. Yes well to be honest there isnt much difference in color except the wierd thing is that after the pour, the surface of the ingot if you may call it that was that of a copper color and was that color for about .005 or sumthing and then after that layer got filed off the color became gold as if it was normal brass. I tried forging it and worked about 10 blows and started to crack. I wasnt using a mould tho, simply pouring onto a thick steel plate. I surrounded it with fire brick incase it stayed liquid enough to run off but it simply sat there and solidified. Well im ganna try again sum time and add more copper to see how the color changes. Will keep you updated. Oh and any ideas for a small mold about 5"X1.5" and say 6mm deep? I might about actualy keep doing this from time to time.
  11. So i thort id be rebel and use the steel one i made and it worked fine, just gotta sand up the piece and a pic will be up shorty.
  12. I shall watch them tonight if the fiance allows me lol, i am lucky to have a set up and ready to go plasmer cutter and thus cut out the two blanks in less than 2 minutes, i will be hot punching the holes in my small forge and bending the jaws to make them suit for grabing flat steel, and might even draw out the handle parts to make it abit longger. If so i will have to cut out an opening at the rear of my forge for a rear exit.
  13. Wow didnt expect those replies, ive always been the kind of person to keep trying but man those tongs are not easy.
  14. Yes theres stores for that around. Gud idea on bracing it. Got sum wire at home.
  15. So im officially a cheater, no matter how many times i tried i kept failing on forging them tongs and as much as id hate to do it ive decided to mark out 2 tong halfs on a piece 1inch flat that i will be plasmer cutting tommorow at work. I know people may say that practice is the key and yes it is but i need a pair asap and i got a few knives im meant to be finishing for someone so i dont much free time to practice making tongs. Tell me what you think.
  16. Its a hard brick and its about 2 inches wide so a 3/4 inch hole should be perfect.
  17. Yeah from ive seen shipping isnt cheap. Any ideas on the ryt drill bit to use?
  18. A few small pieces of fire brick, an old kiln shelf used in pottery glazing and a hibrid bench grinder/sander
  19. no offence but im not paying 100 bux for crucible I plan on using once, and I managed to pick up some pretty solid fire bricks from a kiln plan and the guy gave me a few cubes and said to use a big drill bit and make one from a cude, and also picked up a kiln shelf for 10 bux haha
  20. Ok so im sure this stupid but ill probly do it anyways lol, im gonna make a small steel crucible(with a very long handle to stay far from the hot side) and cover the inside with fire clay mixed with abit of grog or silcon carbide just to keep the molten metal away from the scale forming from the steel crucible, as I said its a 1 time use only, if I decide I like the end result enough I will purchase a proper one,
