  1. Winter is in full force, My kids had to walk in snow for Halloween. I'll have to find a way to keep my propane from freezing up, I'm also thinking of building a smaller forge today.I'm thinking a smaller burn chamber will be better for the winter. As it will soon be - 40 up here.

  2. Hello Shaye. I am wondering if you have had much luck with you home smelting. I have uploaded s few pictures of some of the slag I have. I am trying to find a way to separate the copper and other metals that are in the slag. maybe you have some knowledge that can help me.
  3. I have recently been given a pail, of what I think is slag, mixed with some type of metal. It may well be copper. What I am trying to find out is how to separate the metal from what would be waste. If anyone has an idea on how to either hammer out or smelt out the metal or metals. please message me.

  7. I just want time to start the forge. Its been weeks since I've started it up. It dosen't look like i'll get the time this weekend either. However the bronze is in. So that makes me happy.

  8. Please leave comments. I can't get better without feed back. either positive or negitive.
  9. Very nice looking shop. Your forge looks like its propane? Are you worried about carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide in a 8 x 10 room? The only reason I ask is because I thought I would have to use my forge outside. It sure would be nice if I could move my propane forge into my 8x10 shed. Sometimes, where I live, it's too cold out outside for me to work.

very nice looking piece, I would like to see how it was made.
  11. Same piece of work.Just a closer look at the lettering.I used a brass welding rod to melt into the lettering. Next time I will try to have more detail and decoration.
  12. This is my first piece of work.I only wanted the basic shape for a wall hanger. It is also my first attempt at engraving.
  13. I built my own propane forge in about 8 hours of actual work time, including a home made burner. The hardest part was finding a good liner locally. If you spend some time on YouTube, you can get lots of ideas. Now that I have had the chance to look through the pages and pages of help, here at IFI. You can also find ideas here.
  14. I found a good web site to buy silicon bronze rod. Can't wait for my order to get here.

  15. Hello Nohone. I am so new to the blacksmith sene, that I don't even have a real anvil yet. I'm using a chunk of old rail track. My tool collection is very basic. An old file, some sand paper, two pairs of old plumbing pliers, a 2 lb hammer and an old ball peen hammer. In fact I wanted to keep my investment cost down, so I built my own propane forge.with a bit of help from a friend and his welder. Now I've only had my forge up and running a few weeks. So far I built a really bad pair of tongs, 2 ok looking curtain rods for my front windows. A small bronze knife and a horse shoe to hang on my wall. Now that my family have herd about what I am doing, my sister in law wants plant hangers for her house,so does my wife. I want to make my wife some garden tools, maybe some shelving brackets. An old style dinner bell would be a good gift for my father in laws farm, maybe even a set of bull horns for my truck. Well good luck with what ever you build. I just like to get out and hammer as much as possible.
  16. Unbelievable, I revived a quote today, for 1/2 " x 12' silicon bronze rod. My local metal shop wants me to pay $800.00 for one length!!!!! I can only hope my girlfriend made a mistake taking the message.

  17. I gather that when its time for me to try and forge weld. I should have a pure form of borax on hand. Thank you for the info, I'll try out some forge welding next week maybe. If I can up load a few pictures of my first attempt. Everyone, myself included may get a good laugh.
  18. Made my first decorative horseshoe. Well a shape like a horseshoe anyways.lol. My girlfriend wanted me to make her one to hang on the wall. Not to sure how to upload a picture of it.

  19. Ok I'll bite. What's up with borax? I am new to blacksmithing, never tried to forge weld yet. However from the videos I've seen, I thought I would have to use borax to forgeweld? I know I probbley sound dumb. But I was raised to believe that there is no such thing as a dumb questions.
  20. Great looking hawk, any tips as to how to work bronze?
  21. Very happy right now. My first home made, propane forge is up and running. I tried to make a set of tongs today. They don't even look like tongs, just some messed bent out of shape steel, Lol. At least I tried, and had a lot of fun.

  22. Ordered the linning for my forge yesterday, from Sounding Stone. They even tossed in a kiln shelf to use as a target block.

  23. Geoff is the name. Thompson Manitoba Canada. New to blacksmith sene. So new I don't even have an anvil yet. Made a few knifes and spears as a kid, in my dads work shop. He didn't like that to much. 30 yrs + now with kids of my own. One wants a bronze knife for his Boy Scouts camping trip. So I built a my first propane forge for videos on YouTube. I would like to find a blacksmith here in Manitoba that would give lessons. Maybe I could even get good enough to change a hobbie into a full time job.
