  1. Happy Christmas to one and all both near and far!
  2. Everyone has a story, I've been "bit" a time or two but this horror story involved my nephew years ago. He was using a wire wheel cleaning paint off a motorcycle tank. He took a wire to his eye which infected due to the paint and solvent. A week later the infection moved to the other eye. It was touch and go there for several months and he really lucked out and now has normal vision out of BOTH eyes.
  3. Did real good! My wife got me David Einhorn's book on Cilil War Blacksmithing AND a 4 1/2# hammer (#39) from Dave Custer at Fiery Furnace Forge. Gave it a try making a couple of things for my daughter who visiting from SoCal. It really moves material!
  4. That is going to be a nice shop when done! I really like the rustic look.
  5. There be some lucky people on Christmas morning. Nice work!
  6. Here's mine. Unknown manufacture on the plate. Made the stand myself with removable legs so I can haul it to events.
  7. I just got one of fiery furnace's hammers too! My wife is sticking it under the Christmas tree though. I also have one of those Chile forges and really like it. Have patience regarding finding a anvil. It took me a couple years before I got my first good anvil, a Trenton. Now it's no problem finding one with the connections I've made with the CBA. A little birdy told me that a shipment (5-6 tons)of European anvils, old ones, will hit our shores early next year. I will post when that happens.
  8. Don't know if they carry the belts you're looking for, but one of my favorite sanding belt suppliers is mscdirect.com. They ship VERY fast! I tend to get items the very next day when I order from them.
  9. Just finished cleaning up this Parker vise so I could install it on my new workbench. Didn't get a pic of the rusted up mess this one was. I kinda like the natural look of iron, so I used boiled linseed oil on it to keep the rust away.
  10. At that price I too would pick that one up. I had a large Vulcan for several years and it served me well. I only sold it to make room for the next large anvil coming into my shop next month. The gentleman who purchased it has been very happy with it.
  11. And my wife was asking what I wanted for Christmas, problem solved. Great stocking stuffer.
  12. I'll keep an eye out here central CA.
  13. Now I have another reason to get a lathe... Nice work!
  14. Is this anvil one of those "pigs feet" anvils? And it sure is a beauty!
  15. I have a nice pair made from oil well sucker rod. When I looked up what material they made that stuff out of I got: 4130, 4140, 1045, 9260 and maybe W2. Don't know what part of Utah you're in and if it's a oil producing area to boot, but it may be cheap there if it is.
  16. I wish to thank John for his recommendations for a friend of mine asked pretty much the same questions on FB yesterday regarding gas forges. I past on your info to her and we'll see which one she gets. Now I may want one of those fuel saver valves too, I tend to burn almost 3 40lbs bottles a weekend at events.
  17. As a retired Safety Officer on one of those " Incident Management Teams" ,the folks who manage those pesky large wildland fires out here in the western US, you have asked a question that may take awhile to answer. As suggested above, look at those posts and also use some common sence. For if something doesn't feel or look right, it usually means there is a problem. Here's the most important one! Protect your eyes! The next 547 safety guidelines I leave up to you to find, research and implimemt.
  18. Here's one shot of the smithy at the Mariposa County Museum. When they have school groups I go over and give them a hand running the forge while Mike here narrates and keeps them back. Behind the line of kids is another forge if we have the need to run two forges. The below pic is from where I took the above picture. Sure like the two shops that John McPherson gets to play in.
  19. I'll try to find some pictures from two of our setups out here in California, one at a County Park and the other at a very nice museum in Mariposa County. That will explain my vote for two independent stations. Both locations are close to those measurements you have. If I can't find them, I'll go take some pictures this next week.
  20. I like that last one from Jim, I will use that "secret procedure" sometime at a demo when faced by that situation.
  21. Thanks for the input so far! Hopefully I get to see pics of it tomorrow.
