  1. Nice Anvil! It will serve you well. I had an Arm and Hammer that looked just like that not to long ago. Yours has a great makers mark, nice and clear and deep.
  2. Just stumbled across this thread and just think those signs are the coolest thing for a shop! Great job!
  3. Welcome to IFI! I too I'm from CA but on the other side of the hill from you. I have two nice Fishers and really like using them! I know you'll find that out yourself once you put hot iron to it. Everybody is so concerned about the price they paid because other people found a great deal somewhere or somewhen. If the anvil is in decent shape and has not lost its temper due to a fire(I have one of those) BE HAPPY WITH IT! It will be the corner stone of many hours of happiness and some frustration but overall you will benifet from it. I don't know exactly where you live but if you could look into the CBA's web page (California Blacksmith Assocoation) and see if there's any groups in your area to work with.
  4. Those are rivet sets. Got a few myself. https://www.google.com/search?q=rivet+setting+tool&espv=2&biw=1366&bih=643&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ei=aUkHVbSqI9K1oQTUr4CoDQ&ved=0CD8QsAQ
  5. I sure will Frosty! The convention is at Old Tucson, the movie set built back in the (I think) late forties early fifties. Great location for this type of an event. Here's a pic from last year of my wife and I.
  6. I guess I'm in what you'd call the "central" zone of California. I'm in a town called Oakhurst in the foothills just south of Yosemite NP. We meet once a month (second Saturday 9am) in Mariposa at Bob Ringrose's place. You can message me here for details. You can also find us at some of the local Museum's, Mariposa History Center, Fresno Flats Historical Park in Oakhurst and Coarsegold Museum. My shop at home has a full setup and I sometime announce a hammer in day on my FB page. Forge has been cold lately since I've had another long term project going. Also I'm currently in Tucson Arizona getting ready to attend WWWC4 ( it's a steampunk convention). I do plan on being at the CBA Spring Convention in Hollister. I'm bringing a truck and trailer load of German and English anvils, about 5,000 pounds worth and some cones, post drills, tongs, hammers and stuff!
  7. I'll get there! Someday, somehow, I'll get there! My wife and I do want to visit and tour the east coast someday in our RV.
  8. I sooooooo gotta visit that museum!!!
  9. Is this yours or the one currently on eBay? Or both?
  10. Try "The Ring Lord". I get all my chainmaile and scale stock from them. They sell chainmaile in large pieces I believe.
  11. I recently picked up this little 108lbs Fisher for my nephew. He was wanting to get started doing some light smithing work out of his garage and has close neighbors. So I thought this one would fit the bill just fine for him. Plus it was not very expensive. Yes it has some unusual wear on the horn but shouldn't hinder him to much.
  12. Without pictures it's hard to determine which style this one is. With a pass through I was thinking of an very early model, the ones that predates the "old style" model. I'm very interested in seeing this one! I recently picked up a 50 pounder that's nothing special besides its going to be a pain in the rear to get it out to the street to load up.
  13. I starting watching this for the entertainment value. It came up lacking.
  14. I saw yesterday a ad in CL for some LG dies up in Auburn CA. The guy had several 50 pound dies and at least one set of 100's. I had searched using "anvil" and found them. He is selling a couple hammers too.
  15. I think you've shown great enginuity in this build and have overcome the lack of a anvil in your area. Please post pictures of the stuff you're making on it!
  16. I recognized that anvil! Welcome aboard!
  17. Well shoot, all I got is a boring Discover Card ad.
  18. Welcome to the good life! Just celebrated 3 years of my retirement and just like the others above, I'm busier then ever and loving every minute of it!
  19. The above anvil posted by Rapula I believe is from the Mariposa County History Museum in California. If so it was found mostly buried in a wet creek by a gold mine.
  20. After looking at your post I'm wondering if I had correctly identified my recent acquisention. I had posted it here under the Sonderfors page but it sure looks like your Paragon. The stamping on my 257lbs anvil is pretty weak at best. I can pick out "Sweden" and the weight stamps and nothing much else.
  21. I like two styles of stands, this three legged stand I like for larger anvils. To quite the anvil the legs are filled decomposed granite. I packed it in with a pneumatic hammer. The anvil sits on a one inch steel plate with a seven layer 5/8" plywood shim. This 407lbs S&S anvil would ring like a bell before and now is pleasurable to work on without earplugs. Not a great picture of one of my wood stands. I fixed wheels and a removable tee handle to it for ease of use at events or just moving it around the shop. I don't recommand this style for an anvil over 150lbs.
  22. Wish I had. I told a good friend about it and he bought it for $175 and a steak flipper! I have two Fishers and this anvil just didn't sound right when I bounced a ball bearing on it. Those hammer marks raised a red flag for me too. It all worked out since I still had money in my pocket when a 150 Trenton dropped into my lap this next weekend!
  23. I too have asked Santa for a set on the off center tongs from Quick and Dirty. Along with a couple others.... Hope Santa comes through! I have several tongs from Toms Tongs, Centaur Forge and OCP, No complaints.
