  1. Thanks for reminding us that the spirit of giving is alive and well. Merry Christmas, Peter
  2. Iron, If you want to do it with a two sided taper, it has to be a fixed, like a closed V. have a spring tool like this for pointing square stock. It has size limitations. I saw a pivoting spring tool but I'm not sure how it works or what is size of stock limitations might be. One other suggestion, cut a piece of 1.5 in round stock in half length wise. Weld a piece of 3/8 flat to the flat of the round. Now use the flat side on the taper and the round under the hammer. It's a set tool so you can ride the taper as you work. The round side evenly redirects the force to the flat side. It's simple and it works. Hope you are enjoying the coastal Christmas season. Sugarloaf is in full on tourist ski mode. Merry Christmas to you and yours. Peter
  3. Iron, Any chance you could elaborate on the taper spring tool? I am doing some work with tapers and need some insight. I have a spring set for doint short tapers on the end if quare stock, but it is fixed and doesnt float on different lengths. I'm tring to get a new approach here. Where in Maine? Our shop is in Carrabassett, a lot of snow this week. Peter
  4. Steve and all, I received my signed copy of Introduction to Knife Making" yesterday. The book is well thought out, concise and through. Steve has done a great job of both compiling and presenting the information. Thank you Steve for your efforts in sharing what you have learned. All the best and Merry Christmas, Peter
  5. How do you find all these items? I'm amazed at your ability to consistently come up with all the antiques you collect. Great work my friend. Happy hunting and a very merry Christmas. Peter
  6. Charles, Ifound the stormcrow powerhammer synopsis. The dies are mirrors and they have a shallow and a steep side. The radius is large. The video also details their function as well as other custom tooling Mr. Helm produced. I certainly have the idea now. After viewing much of the library I can say that Mr. Helm is a class act. Peter
  7. Gents, Spent the morning making a tapered lower die for the hammer, grinder and belt sander machiningI believe the japanese smith has a crowned die wheras he can work both sides to true the taper. I will check out Stormcrows video. I have a good supply of scrap leaf springs and I am determined to figure this out. Never having done many real knives my scrap pile is directly proportional to my many attempts. I persevere . Thanks for your suggestions. Peter
  8. Iron, " the forging of a hunting knifeTosha Japan, 2013" , seen on U tube. I wasent able to copy the URL, says it wants a subscription. i' m working off a ipad as well, that may be an issue. The bevel is dine later in the video but the best shot of the hammer tooling is in the beginning. Let me know what you think. Peter
  9. May Peace be with your friend and his family. Peter
  10. Gents, I saw a video on a japanese knife maker using his powerhammer to set the taper on his knives. it was difficult to see the angle of the tooling but it worked like a charm and it did not mar the grind line. Anyone have a diagram or pic of the tooling that serves this function. I have spring swages for setting the short taper on square stock. However, this tooling doestn work well for knifes. Not having seen a good view of the setup, i'm not sure if it is a lower taper and a flat upper or a matched set. I have a Clay Spencer tire rig and it has served me well. Any ideas? Thanks in advance and a very Merry Christmas to all my fellow iron bangers out there. Peter
  11. Jed, Great scavenging. Ingenious as well. Peter
  12. Key fobs with a key ring. Easy and fadt, you can crank these out. Peter
  13. Gents, Has anyoneever traved the UK and visited the smiths there. I would consider setting up a trip because i think the history and quality if UK smiths is worth studying. Peter
  14. Jack, Bob out thescrew holes with a small ball peen so that the screws are flush. Otherwise it all look good. Peter
  15. Jacques, Nice shop. Very squared away. I am envious of your organizational focus, the shop looks ready for inspection. Peter .
  16. Sparky, Add heat....magnetism goes away. Peter
  17. Careful now. Most states have a defense doctrine. Some allow defense of yourself or others if the is a threat of severe bodily harm or death, in any instance. The catch is if the state has a castle defense doctrine or maximum retreat doctrine. Understanding these specifics in your state will allow you to act accordingly. It's not the ok coral, you have to have cause to believe your life's is in danger. Some less Than scrupulous law types will carry a drop piece ( non traceable weapon) in the event they have what cops call a bad shoot. A weapon discharge that will not stand up to scrutiny by a review board. The keywords are, I feared for my life. Never mention this intention to anyone or you could be accused of creating an attractive entrapment. You were surprised by the thieves , feared for your life and took appropriate action. As any smart lawyer will tell you, dead men don't testify. The survivors write the story. Peter
  18. May peace be with him and his family. Peter
  19. Milwaukee, end mills. We use them in mag based drills to fit engineered steel parts. Very common and you can usually get them at welding supply outfits. They are carbide inserted and a bit pricy but they work slick. Peter
  20. From a personal vantage, my set up has the belt turn toward you (downward). If by chance you have a piece get away from you, you can get out of the way if it's going down but you might catch it up side your head if the direction is reversed. Additionally, the debris being deflected downward is better than it coming up under your face shield. Be safe out there. Peter
  21. Yves, Try looking at McMaster Carr for their letter and number stamps. MSC also has sets available. High quality and they last a long time. I see cheapo versions in harbor freight but they don't last long. Cold stamping is harder on the stamps and obviously they will not last as long. I saw a set of old stamps that Clay Specer had, they might have been German, I couldn't tell. They were in an old font and they looked good. Clay used them to stamp his number and initials into all the Tire Hammer builds he was officiating. Have a good holiday up there in the province. Peter
  22. The further north of the 45th, the more expensive everything is. Peter
  23. Range of motion on your arm is all about the rotator cuff in your shoulder. Muscle turns to tendon at that location and frequently the condition of this tendon is the culprit. Ask your doc, use that free health care you guys have. Peter
