  1. I finaly got my forge blower that I won on ebay. All in all I gave $77 for it. It is a Champion Midway Spiral Gear Blower. Does anyone know anything about it? I can't find much of anything online... at first when I tried the blower it felt a little rough, but then I filled it up with motor oil and now she runs great, and puts out a heck of a lot of air! I would say it is probably comperable to a Champion 400, but I would have to try them side by side to see for sure. I've never owned a hand crank blower before so any kind of tips would be appriceated. also the gear box seems to sort of wobble a little back and forth if you grab onto it or anything and there is a piece of leather (watch band size) that is wedged between the gearbox and blower housing, is that normal/okay? is there a certain bolt or something that i should tighten to fix that? Well here are a couple of pics. (the auction actually) http://www.ebay.com/itm/261082483475?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649 The leather strip starts inside of one blue circle, goes between the gearbox and the blower housing and then ends in the other blue circle.
  2. I know, I know, but it is so hard to wait!
  3. Okay, I think I see the damaged edge... $100 is pretty cheap for an anvil though...
  4. It is a fair drive just over the state line I think... would it be worth making a counter offer online?
  5. Looks great! I bet that cost a pretty penny. :)
  6. Farmall, so you are saying that the anvil is probably from 1800-1820? That is interesting.
  7. I'm looking at the smaller anvil(in the picture), the seller wants $110 for it, is it worth it? I recently saw a rather similar anvil sell for $40! I was too late to buy it though... anyway what kind of metal is this anvil? wrought iron? something else? The seller didn't say how many pounds it was but I'm guessing about 100 pounds give or take a few. any ideas why there is no pritchel hole? did it bust off? Thanks in advance.
  8. I'm not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing! LOL! I wonder if they will come out with a replacement?
  9. Nice! I love Scottish blades!
  10. The past couple times I was in at my local harbor freight I saw that their ASO was missing, so I looked it up on their website and I can't find it there either. Did they really quit selling them?
  11. What kind of anvils do you have in "stock" right now, stewart? Mod note: see tailgating section
  12. Do a craigslist search for your area and check it often, that is the best way to get a "real" anvil otherwise you will have to "make do" with a sledgehammerhead, rr track, etc.
  13. The original intent was to fix it and use it, but I realize that it would probably cheaper to buy another better anvil but I have already learned a lot from it (actually it was mainly you guys) such as the spark test for example, and I am determined to atleast figure out what kind of metal it is made of, so yes it is basically a learning experience. Thanks so much for all of your great help!
  14. Nice! You should make a tutorial on how you made that! I'm sure it would be popular!
  15. I don't see any crack on the bottom of the horn, nor any weld down there so the horn presumably never actually parted from the rest of the anvil. I don't understand why whoever owned the anvil before welded it, any ideas why?
  16. Is this the anvil you were talking about Tim? If it is well, i don't think it is the same type anvil as mine is. For one thing it says that this one weighs 70 pounds, mine weighs 100 and that is without the missing face! http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/clean-70-lb-vulcan-blacksmith-anvil-dated-1895-no I think i might try a little more grind testing to determine the exact areas where the sparks act like steel and where they act like cast iron, that should be useful information... Any more suggestions?
  17. But then how do i tell what the face/horn is made of? Does anyone know where i could find a picture of one of those early vulcan anvils you were talking about Tim?
  18. Alright I spent all afternoon familiarizing myself with my new grinder and with what the sparks from different metals look like, cast iron, high and low carbon steel etc. I have a piece of crappy metal which came off a tractor or something that looks cast. I ground it a little and to me it looked the same as all the steel, could it be cast steel? but that is a little off topic. Anyway I finaly ground a little on the bottom of the anvil and it looked very similar to the cast iron sink I ground earlier. So I figured it must be cast iron, but then I decided to grind a little on the tip of the horn. When I did, yellow sparks came off and they looked more like the steel I ground earlier rather than cast iron. So the only thing I can figure is that it must have a cast iron base and a cast steel upper. Is that possible? Are there anvils like that? All that I got from this was total confusion. Help!
  19. I just bought a brand spankin' new angle grinder yesterday with a few extra grinding wheels. That should be nice to do the test with. where can I get a piece of cast steel to compare my anvils sparks to? I have some scrap cast iron but I also need a piece of cast steel to compare (don't I?) my anvils sparks with. Thanks all you guys for your help. I greatly appreceate it!
  20. By the way this design is rather heat sensative as it is nearly all plastic. Yes, it is rather small. and I'm not really reccomending it. just showing you that it can work... There are MUCH better options though. It was just one of my earlier attempts at making a blower.
