  1. If you're wanting a gas forge I would go with what I've purchased in the past. Majestic forge makes some really inexpensive and quality stuff. I have a stand alone single burner with a platform underneath. For 200$ you really can't beat the deal. Unless you are really hell bent on the mini forge I would check that site out. In the time it will take you to build that mini forge you could save up for one of their forges. I also have a nice knife maker forge from them too. I'm in no way affiliated with this company just a happy customer. I'll post a pic of the stand alone one so you can see it.
  2. Awesome story! And a sweet anvil. Never hurts to ask! All they can say is no. All guys named Robert are good men. (Cough cough my real name).
  3. Completely agree Javan C.R. Saying old world anvils were better than anything we can make new today, is just as silly as saying old Damascus steel was the best steel ever made. When everyone knows that's not true. They didn't have the metallurgy we have today and the ability to make the alloys we have today. There is no need to continue this old tools were better myth. When that's just what it is. A MYTH!
  4. Maybe you should read this entire post my good sir..... Maybe then you will understand my statement...... I was referring to a comment Judson yaggy made about anvils. The new price for anvils starting at 5$ a pound and going up to 8$ or 9$ per pound. Now that I've explained it.... Do you understand?
  5. Lol really? 8 or 9 dollars a pound? I've never heard of someone willing to pay that for a used working anvil. Why do that when you can buy a brand new full tool steel anvil for less than that!!? A collector I can see. But your average joe? No way.
  6. Yeah the TFS smith special is a beautiful anvil with everything I've been looking for. 1inch hardy hole, a decent step, good pritcel hole loctation, double horn, and an upsetting block. You can't ask for much more than that. I was just quoted a price in the 300lber for 1350$. It looks like I'm gonna go with her. I'll be sure and post pictures as well as my review on her as soon as she gets shipped to the farrier supply place. Thanks for all the help fellas. Words can't exspess how glad I am to have found this site.
  7. You make very good points kubiack. I've emailed Home Depot to see what they say about the Peddinghaus. The farrier supply place has told me shipping would be free, they are supposed to contact me with the exact price sometime soon. Thank you so much for the link to primetechsnith I will shoot him a pm and see what he has to say about the JMH. If Home Depot gives free shipping and a slightly lower price than what kayne and son are offering ill jump on that Peddinghaus. Pound for pound and convenience. It's definitely looking like I'll be getting a TFS if primetechsmith has nothing but good things to say about the other ductile iron anvil. Or unless someone shows up saying to steer clear of it. I just don't see a huge company like TFS putting out a bad product when it's centered around smithing? That's their business after all.
  8. I think I'm just passed waiting for a good deal to fall from the sky. The one time it has I sadly wasn't in a position to get her. A sweet 288lb Peter wright that I still have nightmares about. I am in a place now that I can afford a brand new anvil. So I'd rather know exactly what I'm getting, and not have to sit around and hope and dream that it will come along. With not paying a dime for shipping on a TFS anvil has really caught my attention. That's why I'm asking about that type of anvil and how people like them. Not about shipping prices so much. Thank you guys for the help. I really apreciate all the valuable info.
  9. The ones I've got quotes from where actual freight company's bidding to get the job from the anvil makers location. I had to enter there pallet size, weight, etc. The TFS won't have a shipping cost, because I will buy it direct from a farrier supply place right here in Norman Oklahoma. It's literally 10 minutes away from the shop it will spend the rest of its life in. So I mean there are some serious pros as to why I've been so interested in the TFS anvil. The ductile iron they use is hardenable just like any tool steel. I did some more research on the exact ductile iron used. The 80-55-06 ductile iron grade has a ferritic/pearlitic matrix. The mechanical properties of 80-55-06 will be similar to medium carbon steels that contain up to 0.50% carbon including 1040, 1045, 1141, and 1144. All grades of ductile iron bar stock respond very well to conventional heat-treating methods. All I need is a good response from someone that's actually owned or used one extensively. I emailed a guy on a different forge that talked about him buying a 300lber, but he didn't say how it was. So I'll let you guys know what he says if he even responds.
  10. Thank you for the advice. I'll have to see what kind of deal Home Depot might be able to cool up. And yes I've got shipping quotes from 2 anvil makers. One was just under 400$ and the other was just over 400$.
  11. I see your point. I've looked at all of those anvils before, and they all have been in my thoughts as a purchase for sure. I had just seen the tfs anvils and liked there weight, and design. I also will have a good chance of not paying any kind of shipping because I could buy one direct from a farrier supply place where I live. If I could hear from someone that has actually owned one and has compared them to similar anvils it would make my choice much easier. As you've said this is to large of an investment to mess up, I hate that shipping has to be a factor. But saving an additional 400 to 500 on shipping alone is quite hard to pass up. I know quite a few farriers here in Oklahoma, and they all say Texas farrier supply puts out quality anvils. They just didn't know about the big gun smity special.
  12. I've recently come into some extra funds and have really been eyeing the Texas farrier supply smity special 300lber, and their 400lber. I just haven't seen any reviews. I don't know anyone that has one either. So if anyone has one and can tell me how they like it and what they don't like about it I'd really appreciate it. I love the design, the weight, and the price. I contacted the sales people but of course they will always give a glowing review on a product. So any info about them would really help. Thanks.
  13. I agree with hilt and hammer. Show off that hard work of forge welding with a good etch. You can still do it. The knife flows really well. I love it.
  14. Either way no ones using them! At least the old man only has 1 tool that people will more than likely never strike a hammer on, and at least it means something to him. I say better that than an entire warehouse full. I do see your point. Either way no ones using them lol. At the end of it, all anyone has is their will. Be it the old man, or the warehouse man.
  15. If you're confident in your drilling skills I personally would just drill the head off and punch it through. Of course that's what I do for a living so I might be a bit biased on that. A good cobalt drill bit, and a nice pneumatic drill would make easy work of that old bolt. If you do plan on drilling it, just remember to go with very slow rpm (600 to 800) with a lot of down force on it. Should come out beautifully.
  16. Wow that's a crazy story. Lol. You were about to get a sweet deal on a post vice. Then your friend informs you that they go for even cheaper!! Lol that's insane.
  17. Oh what a beauty. Very happy to see someone getting a beautiful anvil. Congrats.
  18. I dont remember saying muesums didn't have stock piles of things not on exhibit. I said I don't see the love for the tools there. I don't see how you can say you're passionate about something and then treat it that way. I wouldn't even think of calling that one in New Mexico a "museum".
  19. I'm not referring to you njanvilman. Just to be clear. I am referring to the video only. I have never seen your museum.
  20. I'm not sure I've ever seen a museum pile their exhibits in one mass lump on the floor. I'm referring to the post vice pile. "Museum" that's a little far fetched. If you are buying your "exhibit" pieces up so fast that you simply don't have the time or just don't care to sort and catologe it. I don't see the real love for the tool there. More power to the man. If he has the means and the want. Then nothing should stop him. This is America after all.
  21. Yes I know that njanvilman. That's why I said I understand it for research. But that guy has piles and piles of tools. For what? To say he has them? Obviously money is not an object for him so it's not a business venture he is making. So I disagree with the "driving the market up" he is making it more expensive for his own addiction as well. As the old saying goes. He who has the most tools wins. That guy wins by a long shot lol.
  22. I knew I shouldn't have watched that video lol. Now I know why I can't find a single anvil that I want. People like him have them all! Now I understand for research, but on the same side research the piece. Heck take mold of it then send it back into the wild lol. My point being just because you CAN have that many. Doesn't mean you SHOULD. I guess I have to look at it this way. He is technically saving them from being melted down, and saving them from ever being used again lol!
  23. That's awesome. Thank you for the response. So you do all of this with just a striker and yourself? That's incredible. Basher and you have made me fall completely in love with axes.
