  1. This is the one I made. It is like the one Brian Brazeal has at his shop. There is an article on IFI somewhere and he explains how he made it. Mine is 3x4x10 with a 1 inch plate under it. 24" high. Legs are 8 degrees. Hope that helps. 7/8 hardy hole, same as my anvil.
  2. Come to central Illinois, you can find all the chert you you can carry in some fields. Most all of it I've found will make a spark. I'm not an expert on arrow heads, but I've found a few made of chert (I think) from the tractor when I was a kid. No tractor cabs back then, so we watched for arrow heads for something to do. They really showed up good in the spring after it rained. If the Indians could knap it, it will spark. My 2 cents worth on it.
  3. To test a rock on a file, you have to use the edge of the file. There cannot be any teeth on the edge, it has to be smooth or it will not spark. You would have to grind the teeth off the edge of the file to use it. And like Thomas says, the rock has to be hard enough and sharp enough to carve a chip off the file or striker. This has been my experience with using files as strikers.
  4. Belson Steel. Kankakee, Illinois. Look em up and tell them what you want to do.
  5. What about railroad tracks thermite welded?????
  6. Historical re-enacting. Mostly French and Indian war period, say around 1760. Have been going to some War of 1812 events as it is the bi-centennial period for it. Making my own iron work and stuff 30 years ago is what got me into blacksmithing. Could'nt afford to buy stuff and go to events too while raising a family. Still farm some and have been making our own repairs my whole life. Learned to weld very young, maybe 8 yrs old or so. Always loved metal work.
  7. Cut a piece of 3/8 square (10mm) 80mm long. Split it or saw it from one end 24mm. From the other end on the same flat split it or saw it 50mm Open both ends on the anvil edge so you have an "X". Cut "legs" off to 8mm long , 24mm long and 18mm long. leave the last leg at 50mm long. Bend the "U' over the horn and make a right angle on the 24mm leg. Hope I explained what I mean so You can understand it. There will be 6mm in the middle that is not cut. Just my take on it.
  8. Beee-u-ti-full !!!! Dimensions?
  9. Why didn't he try milling his forehead? It's probly harder than the anvil WAS! Hope I don't have nightmares tonite after watching that. Maybe should go sleep by the anvils!
  10. Anything but concrete for the floor. I prefer ag lime. Shed could be wood with maybe tin on inner walls? Have worked on concrete for 40+ years at work and it takes a toll on your body!
