  1. Reading about all the peak this, peak that, what will happen next talk made me think of these: http://www.wired.com...currentPage=all
  2. It does not have to be expensive. Boiler makes to much heat. The best thing you could do is put the tubes in under your slab with insulation as needed then add a heat source later. Can be a good water heater as the temps are low, no need for expensive boiler. The link has all the info you need. My entire house is heated off a 50 gal electric water heater dedicated to the floor that turns on 3-4 times a day on an electric timer. No need for fancy controls (expensive). The cost of the tubing is so cheap it is silly not to put it in/under your slab.
  3. In his situation I would put the tubes in the dirt below the slab and insulate accordingly. The water only needs to be 90 degrees F or so.
  4. Highly recommend the heated floor. Here is a great source of info on it: http://www.radiantdesigninstitute.com/index.html
  5. I think you guys are missing the point. We would think a painted anvil would be ugly, but I think stewart is trying to do something his neighbors would think ugly. If they are cheesy enough to put up christmas decorations this early they would probably love to se more cheesiness in the neighborhood. I do like the forging knome though
  6. Yes a fisher anvil in addition to a double post :P
  7. Azur, There is a bellows restoration documented here: http://www.olddomini...The_Bellows.php I hope this helps you. r smith
  8. If you are not sure I would go to a few of the nicest restaurants in your area and explain that you are making knives and are not sure what chefs need. Better chefs at nicer places. May even get an order or two if you have nice examples of your work. Good luck smith
  9. hit the blade against a soft piece of metal. annealed steel would be what I would do to start. Concrete tie wire is such. It should cut the wire easy without dulling or bending the blade. As long as what you try to cut is softer than the hardened edge but not so soft as to be softer than steel (un hardened). If your edge deforms on the wire you know it is too soft for use....Try coathanger next.
  10. You should pay tax on any money you make. If you are a student you may be in a low enough tax bracket to not have to pay taxes, I think it is around $7500/yr but look it up. If you are worried about stupid people causing injury to themselves with your hooks, trinkit etc then can you sell them as decorative parts? Label them accordingly.
  11. nice work john - for someone who doesn't know what they are doing :D Always happy when you post these kind of pics
  12. Cool, that looks nice, thank you for showing us.
  13. It looks to me that the heel has been replaced with a 2" thick or so piece of plate with the hardy hole cut in it. It is hard to tell if a weld is visible on the side or not? some kind of discoloration is visible but could be the lighting etc.... Also the "new" heel has a different texture than the rest of the body that changes at the weld line. Weld looks to be about an inch or so thick. Maybe the thicker plate added the additional 10 lbs.
  14. I would name it "The Alien" due to some of your comments about not liking it or it not fitting in with your other hammers, but the main reason being the space alien face on the safety sticker in front :)
  15. I was once told that when an "old" person talks you should pay attention. I was also told that stupid knows no boundries- it is for life. Just because someone has some sort of certification or training does not mean they are not stupid. Some jobs the training will outweigh the thinking aspect, and some jobs no amount of training will give common sense and basic smarts.
  16. Wow very nice. It looks like they are tri-fold to me though, which is even more impressive.
  17. That is why it is a good idea to hang the magnet from a thin copper wire. Very easy to tell if it is "sticking" or not.
  18. Bidding only got to $2,025. Must have sold it off ebay- 13 bids did not meet reserve.
  19. I think he is just saying that watching anvils at the conference the stands without any additional support of the legs were flexing. Best to tie the legs together.
  20. It is best to hang the magnet from a small wire. Like a strand out of electrical wire. If your doing a small part that will not hold heat maybe you should heat it a bit past non magnetic so by the time you quench it it is still above non mag. The hanging magnet should be swung close to the part and when it no longer deflects.....
  21. That is a great idea. Please post contact info when you can.
  22. Oh yea, me thinks they might be for threading holes? :P
