  1. Thank you all. John you said " Oxyfuel welding usually gets short shrift in modern industrial schools." I work with a guy that also work's in his dad's Fab Shop. He Tig welded a 28 foot boat for use in Alaska. Passed the Coast Guard inspection. He told me " You can't weld with O/A, just cut, braze, heat." In fact alot of of people have been telling me this. They all weld. Mig, stick etc, etc. But they did not learn O/A. Any how, I am leaning towards the Performer because it is a Victor. My hardie hole is almost 1.25 inches, so if I were to make a spring fuller I should be able to weld it onto the shank. I am hoping to get a member of my club to teach me O/A welding. One of them is a instructor at Lincoln Electric, I have not met the man yet. Will be looking for welding book's from the 50's and 60's. As to welding schools 2 problem's there. First I am a Hobbyist. 7000.00 dollars to be a certified welder ( if I pass) seem's foolish to spend. Second It is 3 am. I am getting ready for work. Most classes start around 6 pm and run til 10 pm. I need my beauty rest. So I hope to find a retired welder who will teach me how not to blow myself up! I have started to make friends with some guy's who might be able to help me out. Dropped a couple dozen dounuts off at the place I buy drops from. Another guy that is a member of my club and is alot closer got a couple of jars of pickles I made from my garden. Hopefully I can find someone that I can pay, bribe, help out that will show me some more. In the mean time off to work and reading some more of the post's here. I really have been trying to read all of them, Takes time alot to learn. Later, erietun
  2. I have no right to know what you know. You earned it. I am really new at this. I drive to my club's open forge night just to have the chance to see people do thing's I would never dream about. At first I was overwhelmed by what I was seeing. Now they are starting to slow down for me. Or am I catching on a little? The best night's are when they make me think for myself. Just baby stuff to most real blacksmith's I am sure, but for me it is HUGE! My third night I made a dinner bell triangle. They said how was I going to hang it? So for awile I thought about it and came up with a idea. Jason ( who is a real blacksmith) said ok. He took another piece of metal hammered it flat, punched a hole. Then he held my piece while I punched a hole. Now my wife has a dinner bell. While it is nowhere as nice as other dinner bell's, it is my dinner bell. I was running the bandsaw. The blade popped off. Ralph asked Gary to help me. Gary walked by and said good luck. Took a minute and I got it back on. I was giggling the whole time. I earned it. erietuna
  3. Hi folk's. I finally had a try at welding. This is my fourth attempt. The first try we could not break the weld. Luck of course. The next two broke and Gary should me alot of my error's. This one was a solid weld, although ugly I wanted to keep it so I could show my wife. Gary is a fellow member, the guy is really something. Any way I will be looking to buy a welder. First I want to get a buddy over who is a electrician over to see what I can do as far as power. Also I will be getting a Victor oxy/acet outfit, once I figure out which one I want. Right now I am leaning to a Performer outfit. If any of you have a opion on this model please share with me. Finally I will be looking to take a class or three on oxy/acet welding. I have been looking on the internet but no luck so far. Also, could anyone suggest a good book or two on oxy/acet welding? Thank you, erietuna
  4. Hi folk's, here is a coal rake I made. The real nice one I bought at my club Xmas party. My understanding is that is a Brian Brazeal one that he donated to our club. I thought it would look nice on the wall of my forging area, plus I have a handy bottle opener!
  5. Hi all. Thank you for your input. Well I did get a post drill. A Silver Manufacturing Co. No. 12 post drill. Once I figure out how I want my forging area set up I will get it mounted, Yes I will be using boxes to replicate all the heavy stuff that I will be placing. See I am slowly going through all the post's that you folk's have made. Gotta eat dinner. Later, erietuna
  6. ThomasPowers, Phil I will call him about the vice later today. So what do I look for? See if the screw and screwbox was good. Hmmm how do I tell? Eric feed dog on top that automatically advances the drill. That is what I like to hear. So I take it not all have that feature? Thank you all.......Again! erietuna
  7. macbruce, Merry Crankmust, good pun! No I think I want to drill smaller hole's with the post vise, use the basement dp for bigger stuff. So putting or finding one with a jacob chuck that goes for smaller size drill bit's is the goal. So do I look for a certain type of post drill to do this? Wait Phil. ThomasPowers, no motor as there is no power where my forging area is going to be. BUT I DO WANT YOU TO CAUTION ME AT ALL TIME'S! No I am not yelling at you, just thanking you for warning me. I rely on adult supervision in this, which means all of you. Phil was pointing out the vise to me by the way, heck of a drive from nm for one. Also same question to you as macbruce, So do I look for a certain type of post drill to do this? Thank you Phil, did you see this one http://cleveland.craigslist.org/atq/2757124426.html ? Same problem as a post drill, in that I really do not know much about them........but I am going too. Thank you all again. erietuna
  8. Hi all. Decided to put a post drill press into my forge area. Of course I know nothing about them! Other than I will be the motor! Since my forge area will not have power I thought to start looking into them. Of course I have 2 drill presses in the basement of my house, but that is 300 feet away. Anyhow do any of you have any suggestion's on what to look for? One brand more so than another? Can I put on a modern chuck or can I still get drill bits for the real old models? I am not in a hurry on this, really want a welder and blacksmith vice first. Oh and of course to get my forge area remodled. So if anyone has some insight and would not mind sharing, THANK YOU!!!!!!!!! P.S. I have been on the web site vintagemachinery.org. It's a mystery how I get anything done with reading this forum and now that site too! Thank you again, erietuna
  9. A couple of more pics. forge2.bmp blacksmithin.bmp
  10. Thanks Jason. One of the guys at work was a carpenter for 15 years. He gave me the okay to tear it out Here is a pic of the forge and I.http://www.iforgeiron.com/index.php?app=core&module=attach&section=attach&attach_id=38414 forge.bmp
  11. Hi all. Bought a propane forge from the President of WRABA, who is hosting our open forge night's. Was able to run it for a few minute's while a buddy was over. Then, of course, I ran out of propane! But he did get some picture's. When he email's me them I will post. Also I have started to clean up the garden shed to put my forging area together. But before I can really start hammering at home I am going to have to modify it some. I will be looking for some adult supervision for this......which happen's to be you folk's. My buddy and I are ramp agent's. He assured me I could tear out the ceiling storage area.......... I asked him where did he work? Was he a carpenter? He said he would help, and if we died it would be together. Well he thought that I might want to get a second opion after the look I gave him! Anyhow I have hammered at home ( in the garage where my 270 lb anvil sit's for now) and over the Xmas week I hope to have my forging area more in order. I am going to take a nap now, gotta go to a Xmas show tonight. Maybe tomorrow I can shoot some pic's of the shed and get some sound advice so I don't check out early. Later, erietuna
  12. Hi Jason. Talked to you a couple of times on the phone about the club. Will be going this Tuesday, hope to meet you proper. erietuna
  13. Hi all. Been out collecting scrap. Got a couple holland mark v landing gear 1995. The Inner leg & screw ass'y is giving me a problem on removal.. If anybody has the know how about this could you pass on some advice? Thank you, Later, erietuna
  14. Thanks for the comps. I thought it was ugly and beautiful at the same time! I had not intended to make something when I went. ALOT different then watching youtube! Thought the folk's there where great. Just wanted to see what goes on, ask question's, see someone make something. One member made a forge shovel. Vlad they have or I should say we have a open forge on Tuesday night's 5-9 pm. Here is the link. www.wraba.com/index.html. It was intimidating because it is something new. The member helping me has been doing farrier work for 40 years. For some reason his hook looked better! I thought how LUCKY I was to be shown by such a person. If they have other members that want to make something too advanced for me ( which is not hard to do) I would be more than happy to watch and learn. Remember you can't ride the horse if you don't get in the saddle. The s hook made the wife happy. Now she wants me to build a wrought iron fence! I knew she would like the anvil sooner or later. Gotta get ready for work, later. erietune
  15. Hi folks. Went to my first Blacksmithing meeting. They said I had to make something. Here you go. Late night last night, gotta get some sleep. P.S. I became a member of WRABA last night. Later, erietuna
  16. Picked up a Transmission today. The wife is looking at me funny. Now I have to figure how to take it apart? Of course I will be asking what to save when that is accomplished! Am going to a open forge at WRABA tomorrow 11-15-11. Can't wait. Get to see what I am getting myself into finally. Thank you all for the input.....and yes I am going to take apart one of the shock's........just because. Oh and yes I started to read up on Quenching agent's.......yep well past 3 million question's now. Oh well gotta go back to work and pay my due's Later, erietuna
  17. Marksnagel , Thank you, I do not want to toss something that might have a use. I am not nor will ever be a professional. Just want to save a buck for a hobby. later, erietuna
  18. Hello all. I have been going around looking/securing places to get scrap. 3 so far. Some questions. 1) I have some shock's off a jeep. Is the rod worth saving? The oil for a Quenching agent? ( Sorry! I HAVE NOT DONE A EXTENSIVE SEARCH ON QUENCHING OIL YET.......But I will!) 2) I have a hot water tank that I am hoping to make into a foundry. Is this metal good for Blacksmithing also? 3) Does a motorcycle have any scraping potentional for blacksmithing? P.S. I do not know what tempering in water, oil, sand etc is,about, how-to, when-to or anything. I DO KNOW NOT TO THROW ANYTHING AWAY UNLESS APPROVED BY A ADULT.....Which happen's to be you folk's. So number 1 above is not asked by someone who is lazy, looking for the easy way out, or anything else that some of the more professional Blacksmith's with the good look's, big house, pretty wife's, cute girlfriends, both, good teeth, fat bank account's know, have or will not diminish themselves with such a trivial question. Just, do I keep these because I am a FNG trying to learn? Later, erietuna
  19. Would it be okay to try some naval jelly? I did use some of the citrus stuff and gobs of black crud came off. Thanks. erietuna
  20. Here are some better pics.....I hope. I have been using a brass wire brush on my hand drill and more lettering is showing. Seems this anvil was used in a foundry setting.
  21. Glenn I will do that Sir. Also I will get some soapstone. bmazingo Thank's. Now please realize that Honeybunny was thumping me soundly that we had to go see the new Neice. I was trying to figure out how to load the pics. Finally I was really Stoked about having a Anvil. I know sorry excuse's. But I got a Anvil! STOKED! Silly joking aside. Really do appreciate the advice, I will get some soapstone ( who would have thunk?) I will take some better pics. But after the ass whupin I put on the yard today it is all about dinner and beer right now. Give me a day or three. Later, erietuna
  22. 781 Yeah I have been doi'n that. The Western Reseve group look's like the one that would be close..... plus they ask to bring a plate to pass around...gotta love people that will eat with you. David Einhorn See above. What book's do you like and why? Marksnagel Yeah I actually fish saltwater for them. In fact I only fish the ocean's. Glenn I have been reading.....and reading......and reading, you get the hint. Figured I would get the anvil to at least start the ball rolling......or should I say get a poker in the fire? Ah isn't in great to be in america!!!!!!!! As to opion's. I took some bad pics of the anvil.( I did not post the real bad one's.) Gotta get some soapstone-------QUICK!!!!!!! Yike's.......Took the wrong angle, use soapstone to read marking's, etc, etc. Seem's my father is still there. Someday I will learn PaPa! Anyhow Thank You. Now back to reading post's, drinking beer and waiting for dindin. Later erietuna
  23. Bolt in my new anvil. Slightly cleaned up.Looks like a 5. Looks like 270. Some of the picture's were bad. Will try somemore later. Gotta go see the new neice. erietuna
