I worked for the phone company for close to 38 years...early in my carrier we we had a job to do, I told the guy I was working with come on lets get it done..he looked at me and said "I get paid just as much to do it as not to do so I'm not going to do it"..its hard dealing with people like that!
  2. I use a vixen file to smooth the sides then I use mineral oil rubbed in;they get dark from work
  3. the hammer you guys made in the last set of pictures what was the starting size of the stock and what is radius you used for the fullering end of the hammer
  4. If you should decide to melt that lead, be prepared as old drain pipe really stinks for some reason

  11. tractor supply sells a bushel basket size galvanized steel container for a little over $15.00 thats what I use also a lot of the guys down here are using Stainless steel beer keg with the top cut out...find them at the flea market cheap
  12. mine are cut for 24" overall I bought a new one a while back from ACE Hardware it said it was a short hadle I put it on a 14 lb straight pein its 26 overall just about right

  15. you can also block open the drop gate(not all the way) it will pull air up and through the fire keeping it burning for a long time!
  16. look for a good chop saw, a band saw would be nice. a couple of good 4½" angle grinders (one with flap disk the other grinding disk), good drill press (floor model)with a good set of drill bits up to 1", good bench grinder...this list could go on and on but thats close to $2000

  18. I have a lancaster blower and gear box close to 20 years ago I had one of the gears made in aluminum , it's still going strong (was not cast but round stock) seems to be holding up even working with cast iron members

  20. thats good to know ...from what I've read the air pressure would tend to push the nails out of the plywood thanks

  22. there is a measured set of drawings in the the book "The Blacksmith" Ironworker & farrier by Aldren A Watson (paperback)ISBN 0-393-32057-x the bellows measures 36 x 67 you can scale it up or down The other book is "How to make a Blacksmith Bellows" by Robert M. Heath no ISBN you can get both on Amazon The bellows in the Heath book is 39 3/4 x 51 overall. a lot of the plans I've seen on the internet they are using plywood for the inside panel . I've been looking a 5/4 decking at home depot and using my tablesaw and tongue and groove cutter instead of the spline joint that is shown in both books. I also found that Lowes carries 1/4 " popular that can be used for the valves...sure wish the weather would clear up so I could start on it
