    Verge and foliot.

    From the album: SCA stuff

This piece of the clock is called the verge and foliot. It is the medieval version of the pendulum. The two pieces were brazed together with copper.

    Cutting gear teeth.

    From the album: SCA stuff

This is the technique I came up with to cut medieval gears. Cut the sides with hacksaw, pop out the waster with chisel.

    About 10 teeth cut

    From the album: SCA stuff

After some cutting, about 10 teeth ready to have waste popped out.
  10. From the album: SCA stuff

Using a very narrow chisel, I gently heat the gear and use the chisel to pop out the waste. The chisel is flat on one side to make bottom of gap smoother and easier to file.

    Cutting gear teeth

    From the album: SCA stuff

Using a hacksaw, the sides of the teeth are cut. I used a divider to layout the position of each tooth and a template to draw the cut lines.

Gear actually in clock frame. I still need to straighten the gear up on the arbor and to grind outside edge to perfect circle. After that, comes gear teeth cutting...

  20. I don't get a financial kickback from this but its nice to not have to worry about losing the straw. Available in most hardware stores.

    First gear on clock

    From the album: SCA stuff

This shows the first gear basic parts mounted on the clock. The gear is two parts, the outer wheel is one part while the hub and spokes are another piece. I had made some mistakes but wanted to try putting the two together to get some practice. Things went great but I need to redo the hub and spokes. That should not take too long.
