Yeah I found a 5/16" spring probably about 12'-15' long after straightening but took it back to the shop last month.thats 2 1/2 hours away :-) my fiance picks up metal for me on her walks but that is all she has found lately. No worries. I was just trying to see what I could do with found materials. Thanks guys :-)

missing parts and crooked screw box and maybe a possible ID?
adam cyphers replied to adam cyphers's topic in Vises
I didnt think it would be easy to ID.any ideas on the screw box? -
My smaller vise had trouble closing then the washer on the screw broke.ive also noticed the screw box is slanted downward. How can I move the screw box back into place without further damage? I have a large brass washer that will fit but ive noticed my larger vise has 2 pieces between the screw and front jaw.ant advice would be much appreciated. I'd like to ID it as well but no markings.

one is a fisher.the other?
adam cyphers replied to adam cyphers's topic in Anvils, Swage Blocks, and Mandrels
First the fisher.with the exeption of surface rust, a dinged up horn tip and some chisel marks near the tip of the horn. she is pristine .no ring and the only marking is the paper label (which I have NOT touched) and the number stamp -
Picked these up today.any thought

How small can you go ???
adam cyphers replied to Yellow Hammer's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
This tiny leaf is about as small is ive gone. Somewhere ive got pics of a doll sized seachest with forged hinges I made.I love small intricate work :-) -
so...long story short im a glazier.....I recently bought one of those plastic cases with the different screwdriver bits.well the plastic trays wouldnt stay in so i globbed a bunch of clear silicone caulking on the back since theres so much around the glass shop and it was close at hand.closed the case and kinda forgot about it for awhile.next time i opened the case my once new shiny steel bits are coverd in a black/dark brown/red very fine dust.the only explination i can think of is that the silicone corroded them....any anwsers?im currently trying to reproduce this effect on a knife blade my fillin the bottom of a box with the caulking and suspending the knife over it..also the silicone never comes in physical contact with the metal...i.e. fumes...does anyone know the science behind this?maybe this could be a new way to blacken steel?

well for the most part i keepmy stock and scrap bits together in an old ladder the bottom is screwed to the floor and laid flat. the top is raised up about 4' or so....it gives me a good place to store all the different lengths and shapes...and for the teeny drops a box at the ladders base.

when i find some ill be using 1/4" copper plate till then i use 1"8 anealled mild steel plate bent to fit over my anvil.i would prefer copper as it is much softer and wont wear out my chisel as fast.
