  1. If the serial number is correct, it was born in 1915, according to Anvils In America. :)
  2. I used a Vulcan anvil for years, with no issues with it. However, as the other guys have said, the Hay Budden is far better quality. Both seem to be pretty high in price, although the Vulcan is way to high. :)
  3. Dave, that saw look just like the one that my steel supplier has in his shop. He's had it for a lot of years and said that he has never had any problems with it. It should last you a LONG time. Good score. :)
  4. Not sure where that coal comes from. But I am in Illinois and tried some Illinois coal, because I could get it cheaper. WOW!! After I fired the forge up with that stuff, I could barely see the forge for all the smoke. It had way toooooooo much sulfur in it. I use West Virginia coal and have good results, including forge welding with it. Try some of your coal and see how well it burns. It is going to smoke until you start getting some of it coked. But after it starts to coke, the smoke should drop off a bunch. Hope this helps. :)
  5. Phillip, I too have a copy of this book and it is very interesting to look thru. I have gotten several ideas on projects that I have made, in the past. Not to copy the item, but to incorporate some of the elements into my projects. Very good book to have. :)
  6. WOW!!! That's gonna be beautiful, John. Keep us posted. Thanks for posting the pics. :)
  7. Good job, Peter. They both look very nice. I like the chain link for the door knocker. Thanks for sharing the pics. :)
  8. Glad to hear that you weren't hurt, Bruce. The truck can be replaced. :)
  9. Good job, Bart. Those tongs look heavy enough to handle a lot of work and last a lifetime. The punch is nice, too. Thanks for sharing the pics. :)
  10. Had a Demo and camp this past weekend. There were over 500 boyscouts plus scout leaders at the camp. I was joined in the forge area by Josh Tulak. Josh has only been smithing for about 6 months and he did a GREAT job. He made a variety of items and even sold a few things. I know that we were very busy from about 8 am on Saturday, until after 5 pm. It was a long day, with that many kids firing questions at us. We had a lot of fun and got to spend some great time at the forge and then some relax time by the campfire in the evenings. Here's a few pics of the crowd at our forges.
  11. Eric, I got a bunch of wagon tires and then I really got lucky. The county took out an old bridge (over 100 yrs old) that was no longer used. They rerouted the road. I talked with the county engineer and he told me that I could have all of the bracing that I wanted. I loaded up my generator, on my trailer, and took an extension cord and my 4" grinder with some cutting discs. I brought home a bunch of 1" square and some 1 1/2" X 5/8" wrought iron bracing. Bonanza!! :) They pulled the bridge out and piled it next to the current road. I didn't even have to get wet. :)
  12. Dang. Now you're getting serious about building a forge. :) Looks good. And that "little blower" is gonna move plenty of air for you. Keep us posted on the progress. :)
  13. Eric, that looks good. Your temporary anvil will work just fine, 'til you can get a bigger chunk of metal. Nice job. Thanks for sharing. :)
  14. That is pretty neat. Thanks for posting the pics/ :)
  15. WOW!! That's a cool idea. Thanks for sharing the tip. It will certainly come in handy. :)
  16. Beautiful work, Jose. Thank you for sharing it with us. :)
  17. Nice anvil, Michael. Don't let Aaron see it or he might try to talk you out of it. :D
  18. Try heating the metal first. Then start to punch. When you get a nicely outlined depression, where the rectangle hole is to be, turn the piece over and finish punching from the back side. You will see a dark outline on the back side and that is where you punch through. This should allow you to take out the plug and leave the hole that you are looking for. :)
  19. Nice looking Hay Budden. How much does it way?
  20. Hey, you have a concrete floor in there. My wife says that mine used to have one somewhere under all that stuff. :)
  21. Scott, I have to say that it looks like you did an excellent job on the repairs. :)
  22. Those are some HUGE pics!!! Looks like it's solid. :)
  23. Uhhhhhh...........You're right about one thing. A welder, you're not......yet. :) But, like Dennis said, "but hey, you tried and are doing what you can with what you have, good on ya." You certainly have a one of a kind. But you DO have one that seems to work. So go for it and share some of your projects. Thanks for sharing. :)
