I know that when my parents renewed their vows last year (25th anniversary) the "theme" was winter wonderland, we wanted 20 birch saplings to line either side of the chapel, $100 each... needless to say i went to our wood lot and got my own, then the shop gave is a big price cut for "donating" them to the shop Josh

Not necessarily, i have grabbed hard/hot/heavy/sharp and your immediate reaction isn't always to drop it, sometimes it shocks you and yo hold on longer. One thing I would add is not to tray and grab anything that falls, you wont necessarily catch it where you plan on catching it Josh

Im telling him you said that! :P

I decided to write down where I got each of my anvils, how much i got them for, and what they are doing at the moment: 50lb Post anvil, from tool collector for $60, in use 210lb PW in ok shape for $300, first anvil, in use 110lb PW in amazing shape was given to me by an elderly couple because they wanted to see it used, and get it out of the garage, gave to a beginner, he turned around and sold it. 175lb PW that has welded edges and hairline cracks in the face, $90 (i got the anvil, a real nice 5" PW post vice, 22 pairs of tongs for $90), in use 70lb farriers anvil in NEW shape $125 (with a 2 burner propane forge, 12 pairs of tongs, 10 hammers and a ton of farriers tools), FOR SALE (i don't use it) 200lb (I think) Vulcan that i just picked up yesterday, a family friend wanted it out of their barn, free, not sure what i'm doing with it Pics when its light out again! Ever forge roman numerals?
joshua.M replied to Black Frog's topic in Blacksmithing, General Discussion
I have seen many clocks where it only has 12, 3, 6 and 9 on it, that would really limit the amount of elements you need Josh -
The way I see it is this: Force = Mass x Acceleration Force is the amount of PSI we transfer to the steel with the hammer Mass of the hammer Acceleration of your swing If I use a hammer with more Mass and swing with less Acceleration I can achieve the same amount of Force as if I swing a hammer with less Mass and more Acceleration. So it comes down to personal preference, do you want to be tired because of swinging a big hammer slower? Or because of swinging a small hammer faster? I personally use a 4.5lb Rounding Hammer I made with Brian Brazeal and Sam Falzone, I have used it for a year and am used to swinging a heavier hammer slower, so it is easy for me. Meanwhile, if i swing a 2lb hammer really fast, I can get worn out in no time, but someone who has swung only a 2lb hammer for a year may have issues switching over to my 4.5lb hammer. It all depends on what you like and what you're used to. My $0.02 Josh
