  1. It would be a big help to know exactly what skills you have at this point as well. I do most of my ax heads by the slit and drift method as my little forge is a bit hard to get a decent weld in. Finnr
  2. Great!!! You did very well! Finnr
  3. Cowboy Charcoal Co. Try this. Finnr
  4. Nope! Lump charcoal is what you want. It's all charcoal not fillers. Finnr
  5. Dad told me way back when I was a kid playing with grinding out knives from old files, " If it stinks and makes your eyes burn , then it probably isn't a good idea." Took him to heart. Finnr
  6. I've gotten my 115 pound PW too hot for comfort a few time drifting hammer eyes. Bit of a shock when you lay a knuckle on it!!!! Finnr
  7. Great job!!! It's good to hear that he's making better grades. Finnr

  9. Either cash up front or cash on delivery. Finnr
  10. The seed was planted when I was about five years old in the mid fifties in a small town in Southern Wisconsin. My Dad took me along when he went to see a fellow who happened to be the local blacksmith and agricultural repair man. I was hooked then. MANY years passed and I got to know a few smiths through the SCA. So about a year or so ago I became very serious and now spend most of my time swatting metal when I am not turning wooden bowls. 11. That's a real good job there!! By the way? How's the arm ? You of course know that one project just isn't enough. It's a disease, LOL Finnr
  12. On the other hand I have made all my own tongs. It all comes down to what works well for you. I like making tools and using tools that I have made. Finnr
  13. Woodsmith and I did a demo in a small local town not long ago. I was very pleased when an older lady came up and told me her Grandfather once had his shop just across the creek from where we were set up. Not only can a person learn about smithing, you can also pick up great bits of local history. Finnr

    Sids Wife

Having cared for several ALS residents in the homes where I was a CNA I know how hard it is on all involved. My prayers definately go out to Sid, his wife and family. Finnr /Art
  15. Mine says Wilkinsons, over crossed ovals, and Queens Dudley under the ovals. From what Ive found online there were five makers using the same name over time. Mine must be before the country of origin was required for import. The other possibility is mine came in through Canada where Wilkinson anvils were more popular. Try this link for more information: The ABANA Forums: Wilkinson Anvil Finnr
  16. I have to go along with the idea of getting a decent arc welder. Then at some later date take a good welding class for the O/A. Finnr
  17. Howdy neighbor. I am in Western Wisconsin not too far from the twin cities. Welcome to the site. Finnr
  18. I'll keep the little one in my thoughts and prayers! Finnr
  19. I picked up a Wells Bros vise a while back for $25.00 and resold it for $150.00 still well below the outrageous prices I have seen them bring on ebay. I also have a Wilkinson Anvil but not Wilkinson Patent. Mine just has Wilkinson Queen's Dudley on the side. It's a fine piece of equipment made in the older style of multiple pieces forged together for the body, and the face plate welded on, unlike the PW anvils that were made in two pieces (base and body ) with the tool steel face plate welded on. If my memory serves me rightly. Finnr
  20. An anvil made of only cast iron will chip, deform and by and large be a waste of money. There were several brands of anvils made with cast iron bodies and tool steel faces. I have not used one so I can't give them a fair shake as far as to the quality. Finnr
  21. Yes Sam I think about it every time I fire the forge. Working hot metal is about the best thing that's ever happened to me in my life. Finnr /Art
  22. First off , what part of Wisconsin, would be a great help. Up this way Badger Blacksmiths offers a beginners class with one coming up this month. See if you can locate a guild or ABANA chapter near you. Finnr
  23. I got a block at long last and have used it on a daily basis since I unloaded it. I use it for anything round I guess would be pretty safe to say.Rather anything I want to make round. Finnr
  24. Check the BP on Vise stand that I did . BP0491 Vise Stand It is a simple way to keep your hammers handy. You should be able to adapt it to what ever you want to hang up. Finnr
