  1. Newbie here also and I agree with your post. I have had to hack together stuff to get me started but I feel doing this makes you appreciate learning more. Ditto on using the Royal Oak brand charcoal....not to expensive and burns hot...wife was good to me and bought me a couple of bags for Christmas...
  2. Bish's Scrap Metal just outside Siler City off of Old Hwy 421 which is about 35-45 min from Raleigh. There phone number is 919-663-3336. It just depends on what they have when you go but they do sell to the public and I have found some useful stuff there. Also very friendly staff. Hope this helps.....
  3. Hey Burlington area of NC here.....I built a forge like some of the designs I have seen on here and youtube and have so far only used charcoal for fuel. I am still kinda new at this but I can't see where there would be any differences.
  4. I am on my second forge now...I built one from scratch and have a hand cranked blower for it. Just kinda getting started really have't had time in the past few months to do anything. I am very interested and do research when I have time. I am mostly interested in making tools and hardware type items. I have also piddled around with making some knives out of railroad spikes.

  5. Hey, Mike--I live just north of Greensboro about 20 minutes in the country--I make knives, but by stock removal--joined this site to research an anvil I sold last month--I am an avid fisherman, make turkey calls and other related game calls and am a dedicated turkey hunter--do you have a forge set up or are you getting started--what is your level of interest in the craft--
    Regards--
    G...

  6. Hey, Mike here from Greensboro area. I saw you posted that you were in Rockingham Co. Not to far from me. Newbie here just trying to talk with other newbies.

  7. Hey John, Just wanted to say hello and introduce myself as a fellow NC here. Mike from Greensboro area. New to Blacksmithing and just trying to make aquaintences.

  8. Fired up my newly built forge today. Same style as some others have made, plate steel fire pot and top with angle iron legs. Champion forge blower which I got a heck of a deal on works great.
